Here is a list of the top moments from the past decade of the girls state basketball tournament in Columbus.

10. March 16, 2000: Almost perfect.

Ms. Basketball Caity Matter gets 32 points and 11 rebounds, powering top-ranked Bluffton to a 64-51 victory over Sardinia Eastern Brown in a highly-anticipated Division III semifinal between undefeated teams. Bluffton's dream season ends two days later, though, with a 56-35 championship game loss to South Euclid Regina.

OHSAA2005 Dayton Chaminade-Julienne Eagles.
9. March 12, 2005: She's got game -- and help.

Ms. Basketball Aisha Jefferson has a quiet weekend in the scoring column, but her Dayton Chaminade-Julienne Eagles end Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame's bid for back-to-back state crowns with a 49-38 win in the big-school state championship game. Jefferson and Lindsey Goldsberry get 10 points apiece in the title game.

8. March 12, 2005: On the spot.

Kathleen Gladstone scores only 5 points, but her 3-pointer provides the winning margin as Walsh Jesuit wins its first state championship, scoring a mild upset over Columbus Eastmoor Academy to secure the Division II crown. Walsh rallied from a 7-point halftime deficit and held Eastmoor scoreless over the last two minutes.

7. March 20, 1999: All's well for Hopewell.

Third-ranked Hopewell Loudon completes a 26-1 season with a Division IV state crown, and they do it in style. Two days after defeating top-ranked and previously unbeaten Berlin Hiland, the Chieftains cut down the nets after beating second-ranked Clark Southeastern, 61-51.

OHSAA2006 Plain City Jonathan Alder girls basketball team.
6. March 18, 2006: A team effort.

Youngstown Ursuline's Tyra Grant entertains the crowd of 5,005 with a 30-point effort that includes several highlight-reel plays, but Plain City Jonathan Alder shoots 50% from 3-point range and puts three players in double figures to complete a 26-2 season and win the Division III title, 55-49.

5. March 17, 2007: The double-double.

Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame (DI) and Warsaw River View (DII) each lock up their second consecutive state championships. Mount Notre Dame runs past Stow, 63-43, for its third title of the decade, while the Black Bears muscle their way to a 45-26 win over Hathaway Brown as the Daugherty sisters, Kari and Kristin, combine for 35 points. Mount Notre Dame has won three titles this decade; Kari Daugherty won back-to-back Ms. Basketball awards.

4. March 12, 2005: Double the drama.

Berlin Hiland needs overtime, but the Lady Hawks finish a 28-0 season -- their second perfect season of the decade -- with a 55-47 win over Ottoville in the Division IV state final. Hiland also went undefeated in 2000 and won another state title in 2006, going 26-2.

3. March 17, 2001: Domination.

Top-ranked Beavercreek completes an undefeated season by defeating Chaminade-Julienne, 42-35, in an all Southwest Ohio title game. The star of the show for the Beavers is 6-foot-6 sophomore center Alison Bales, who follows up her semifinal double-double by posting 6 points, 13 rebounds and 2 blocks in the championship game.

OHSAA2003 Regina Royals.
2. March 15, 2003: The dynasty.

South Euclid Regina wraps up its fourth straight Division III state title, dominating Chillicothe Huntington, 65-35, in the title game. A run that started with the school's first title in 2000 was ended in 2004 by eventual state champion Youngstown Ursuline, but Regina won the Div. III title again in 2005.

1. March 17, 2000: Star power -- and perfection.

One future Ms. Basketball, Michelle Munoz goes around another, Barbara Turner for the game-winning layup with 22 seconds left as Mason beats Cleveland East Tech in a thrilling Division I semifinal, 44-42. The Comets finish 27-0 and win the state championship a night later with a 36-25 win over Pickerington. Munoz won Ms. Basketball in 2001; Turner won in 2002.

The top six seeds from the final AP regular season state-wide poll remain alive in the Division IV girls basketball tournament. Leading the pack in Columbus Africentric High School. Can they make it two state championships in a row?

Let's take a look at who they play in district action as well as some other top games scheduled for this weekend around the state.

Columbus Africentric vs. Marion Catholic

Ok, so maybe this game won't be very close, but it is always entertaining to see what Columbus Africentric does next. The Nubians (20-1) are the reigning champs of Division IV and have lost only twice in their last 49 games.

After a 19-1 regular season record, Africentric entered postseason play on a high note and parlayed their momentum into a 74-11 victory over Millersport in the Sectional Finals.

Marion Catholic will have to play near flawless basketball to pull of what would be a monumental upset. Much of the onus will be on the shoulders of guard Hannah Reiff, who has averaged 21.2 points per game this season.

Lutheran East vs. Cuyahoga Heights

One of Northeast Ohio's finest, Lutheran East, will take the court against Cuyahoga Heights in a Burton district semifinal. Lutheran East finished the regular season as the fourth-ranked team in the state.

The young Falcons, with only one senior starter, hasn't let inexperience affect their play. They looked like seasoned veterans earlier this year when they knocked off Division III power Regina, handing them their only loss of the season.

Latisha Walker, despite being only a sophomore, has been terrific this season and is one of the Falcons' unspoken leaders.

Should Lutheran East advance, they could have a tough matchup in the district finals against Bedford St. Peter Chanel. The Firebirds struggled with youth much of the season, but return pieces from their state semifinal team a year ago.

Berlin Hiland vs. Frontier

The second-ranked team in Division IV, Hiland (21-1) has been dominant this year and has yet to be tested in the playoffs. They hope to return to the state championship after a year hiatus. Hiland won the Division IV state title games in 2005 & 2006.

The Lady Hawks have massacred two postseason opponents by a combined score of 155-32. Frontier now stands in their way in a Gnadahutten district semifinal. Like Hiland, Frontier has won both their postseason contests by double digits.

Expect a veteran Hiland team to keep the foot on the gas. With eight returning lettermen from a 21-5 season a year ago, Hiland has its sights set on a rematch with Africentric. The Nubians knocked the Hawks out of the playoffs a season ago in a regional final game. This year, a possible rematch would take place in the state finals as a 1 vs. 2 affair.

Leading the way for Hiland is Jena Stutzman, a 5-foot-8 senior guard who will play next season at Kent State. She averaged 18 points per game for head coach Dave Schlabach.

Similar to Division II, upsets have been plentiful to date in the Division III tournament, Of the 15 teams represented in the final regular season AP poll, one-third (5) have had quick exits in tournament play. However, the top five ranked teams all remain alive and will put their skills on display this weekend in district semifinal action.

Here are some of the district games on tap to watch.

Casstown Miami East vs. Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy

Both these fine teams have already advanced the Butler district final after narrow semifinal victories. Miami East, ranked fourth in the state, held off Anna HS 44-37 last weekend while CHCA was able to sneak past Middletown Madison 48-46. CHCA is ranked eight in the state and Middletown Madison was ranked sixth.

The CHCA-Madison contest was a fierce one that came down the final seconds. Trailing by one point in the final seconds, CHCA's Courtney Kust buried a 3-pointer with 2.6 remaining to secure the narrow victory. It was the first and only loss of the season for Madison, who bowed out at 21-1.

The Miami East-CHCA contest will take place February 23rd at 7pm.

Regina vs. Columbia Station

The state's second-ranked team, Regina (19-2) will look to advance against a game Columbia Station squad that already has two postseason wins under its belt.

But the going won't be easy against Regina, who boast one of the most electrifying offenses in the state. They have won their first two games in convincing fashion, pummeling the opposition with a ruthless attack. They followed up a 64-point victory over Brooklyn with an incredible 79-point win over Cleveland Horizon Science Academy last week. They averaged nearly 90 points per game in the process.

Much of the reason for the offensive onslaught is the play of guard Shay Selby. The fifth-ranked point guard in the country, Shelby will play at Duke next season. The 5-foot-9 talent was selected to participate in the WCBA National All-Star Game in April.

Versailles vs. Cincinnati Roger Bacon

The state's top ranked team in Division III, Versailles will take on an upstart Roger Bacon team that has seemed to have peaked at the right time.

A youthful Roger Bacon squad found themselves 8-8 nearing the conclusion of their season. However, they won three of their final four regular season games and have cruised thus far through three postseason contests, winning each game by 19 or more points. Leading the way is All-GGCL perfomer Style Harper.

They will have to play even better against Versailles, who remains unbeaten at 23-0 and boast an unforgiving defense. Through three postseason contests, the Tigers have allowed a total of 45 points (15 ppg) including an incredible 89-3 shellacking of Preble Shawnee in sectional play.
Only once this season has a team remained within single digits of the Tigers.

The leader is senior post Justine Raterman, who averages over 19 points per game.

The Division II tournament has gotten off to a wild start thus far as early action has resulted in three of the top five teams in the final AP poll losing in sectional and early district play. The top ranked team in the state, Sandusky Perkins, is hoping the upset bug doesn't bite again. Can they continue to march on?

With district championships on the line this weekend, we look at some of the anticipated matchups across the state.

Austintown Fitch

Many believed this district would come down to a ballyhooed battle between two of the top ranked teams in the state in second-ranked Ravenna Southeast and sixth-ranked Canfield.

However, Struthers had other plans as they pulled off a monumental upset and handed Southeast its first and only loss of the year in the sectional final. Struthers now takes on Salem in a district semifinal, who dismantled Hubbard 51-18 last week.

While Ravenna Southeast faltered, Canfield continued their trek to the district title. They had no problem in their sectional final win, rolling to a 87-31 victory over Streetsboro. Canfield now tangles with Kenston in a district semifinal affair.

The player to watch is Canfield's Kate Popovec, who earlier this season eclipsed the 1,000 point, 1,000 rebound plateau for her career. Popovec, who will attend the University of Pittsburgh, averaged 25 points and eight rebounds as a junior last season and has posted similar numbers as a senior.

Whitehouse

While three of the top five teams in the final AP poll have seen their seasons end prematurely, Sandusky Perkins remains alive in the Whitehouse district. Perkins' only postseason game resulted in a solid 64-38 victory over Norwalk last week. They now face Bryan, 51-37 winners over Maumee in the sectional finals.

Keep an eye on Perkins' senior standout Cierra Bravard. The Florida State recruit is among the top players in the state and will represent Ohio in the WBCA National All-Star Game in April. The 6-foot-4 center was Co-Player of the Year in Division II last season and led Perkins to the state semifinals.

On the other side of the bracket, Oak Harbor will battle with Wauseon in a district semifinal matchup Thursday evening.

Uniontown Lake

Easily the most competitive district in Division II, the battles in district semifinal and final play should be fierce at Uniontown Lake High School this weekend. Three of the four remaining teams are ranked among the top 16 teams in the state in the final AP poll.

The first semifinal matchup features ninth-ranked Walsh Jesuit taking on Mogadore Field. Walsh Jesuit (18-4) has rolled in two playoff contests to date, using a stifling defense to limit their two previous opponents to 25 and 20 points, respectively. Each of the two victories were by 30 points or more.

On the other side, two ranked teams will battle in Akron Hoban and Richland Revere. Hoban (18-3), is ranked eighth in the state and won their first playoff game going away over Ravenna. Richland Revere has also cruised, easily defeating Woodridge and Akron East by double-digits.

Pickerington 2

This district may not be as competitive as some of the others, but it features one of the most talented players in the state in Columbus Eastmoor's Ayana Dunning.

Already committed to LSU, Dunning is a two-time All-State performer. The 6-foot-3 post has been one of the most highly recruited players in the state following a junior year in which she averaged a stunning 19.8 points, 14.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 2.8 steals and 3.2 blocks. Like fellow Division II star Cierra Bravard, Dunning will participate in the April WBCA National All-Star Game.

But first, Dunning will have to lead her 13th-ranked Eastmoor Academy squad to a district semifinal victory over Columbus East. On the other side of the bracket, New Albany and Hamilton Twp. will battle for the right to advance to the district final.

Division I Girls Basketball Tournament Preview

The final AP poll in the state has been released and Dublin Coffman is your regular season poll champions. But will the Shamrocks parlay their momentum into a district championship? District semifinals and finals across the state will be played...

The final AP poll in the state has been released and Dublin Coffman is your regular season poll champions. But will the Shamrocks parlay their momentum into a district championship?

District semifinals and finals across the state will be played over the next few days with teams vying to continue their seasons and reach regional action.

We take a look at some of the most competitive districts in Division I across the state where the competition should be fierce and action-packed.

Parma

Valley Forge High School should be rocking as the host of the Parma District. All of the top four seeds have advanced to the semifinals to be played Thursday. Solon (18-3), ranked tenth in the final AP poll, is the top seed in the district and advanced to the semifinals with a 59-40 win over Normandy. They will take on Strongsville (13-8), 15-point winners over Magnificat in quarterfinal play. Solon must be able to contain Strongsville standout Brittany Reddy, who is back from injury.

The other side of the bracket has Olmsted Falls (16-5) taking on North Royalton (13-8). Each were big winners in their respective quarterfinal affairs. The Bulldogs rolled to a 61-37 win over St. Joseph Academy while North Royalton slaughtered John Marshall 75-22. The marquee player in this matchup will be North Royalton junior Jessie Tamerlano, who eclipsed the 1,000 point plateau for her career earlier this month.

The winner will advance to the Norwalk Region semifinal as one of the top 16 teams in Division I.

Alliance

North Canton Hoover is the cream of the crop in this district, but will have their work cut out for them the rest of the way. The fifth-ranked team in the state has dismantled its competition thus far in postseason play, winning both games by 50+ points. They now face a tough Canton GlenOak team that rolled to a 37-point victory over Youngstown Boardman in quarterfinal action.

The bottom of the bracket will feature two teams who have gotten it done defensively. Canton McKinley has won both of their games, holding their opponents to 44 and 36 points, respectively. They now take on Massillon Perry, who won a 48-47 double overtime thriller over Uniontown Lake to advance.

Harrison 5

The district final matchup has already been set and it should be a dandy. Both Chaminade-Julienne and Lakota West are among the best teams in the state yet only one will advance to regional play. Chaminade-Julienne, ranked sixth in the final AP poll, has won three straight district games and will now tangle with Lakota West, ranked third in the state poll.

Lakota West (22-1) has won each of their playoff contests by 20 or more points, including a 49-point opening round win.

Firebirds' senior Amber Gray has been dominant in the postseason. She followed up a 26-point effort in first round action with 18 points, nine boards, six blocks, five assists and three steals in a 83-33 quarterfinal win over Hamilton. The Tennessee recruit was recently selected to participate in the WCBA High School All-American Game.

The two teams will battle Saturday night at 7:00pm.

Lewis Center 3

The top-ranked team in the state, Dublin Coffman, has been simply dominant this season. The Shamrocks (22-0) are also ranked in ESPN's national top 25 poll.

So far so good for Dublin Coffman, as they have easily won their first two district matchups. They followed a 28-point victory over Teays Valley with a stunning 88-14 point drubbing of Walnut Ridge in the quarterfinals. The Shamrocks have been led by post Kaitlyn Nelson, who has been filling up the stat sheets recently, especially on the glass.

Standing in their way will be Westerville Central, 56-49 winners over Hilliard Darby. On the other side of the bracket, Hilliard Davidson and Gahanna Lincoln will battle to advance the district final Saturday night.
