Check back each and every weekday for the top prep headlines from across the state. Here are a list of summaries from some of the major stories around Ohio for Thursday, June 5th:

Baseball: Cincinnati Moeller falls late to Cleveland St. Ignatius

Moeller, the 2004 Division I baseball champions, fell short of their attempt at another baseball title as St. Ignatius scored three runs in the seventh and final inning for a 7-5 victory in a Division I state semifinal. With the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh, a Kirby Becker fly ball was misplayed in the outfield with led to two runs scoring. The Wildcats scored their final run on a wild pitch by Moeller. St. Ignatius, the 2002 champs, is looking for their second state baseball title. The Enquirer

Baseball: Lakewood St. Edward will meet rival St. Ignatus in baseball final

Some thoughts about the recent regional track meets around the Columbus-area. Included are thoughts about a controversial decision in the Division I 300 hurdles, good sportsmanship by a coach, a young athlete overcoming the loss of a parent, and a discrepancy at the Division II regional at Lexington. The Dispatch

Check back each and every weekday for the top prep headlines from across the state. Here are a list of summaries from some of the major stories around Ohio for Friday, May 23rd:

Softball: Greenville WIns Pitcher Duel, 1-0

The Lakota East Division I district final between Greenville and Hamilton on Thursday involved a pitchers; duel between Greenvillve's Kyli Gunckel and Hamilton's Ashley Boyd. In the end, an infield single by Lady Wave's Madison Shuret with the bases loaded in the first inning was the only run scored as Greenville was victorious. The district title is the third in a row for Greenville (25-5), moving the team into Thursday's regional semifinal at the University of Dayton against the winner of Saturday's Lakota East-Glen Este game. Hamilton ends its season 20-7. Dayton Daily News

Top-seeded Mentor and second-seeded Mayfield played in a wild Division I District final at Euclid High School's Serra Field on Thursday. In the end, a magical comeback by the Wildcats gave them a 9-8 win over the top-seeded Cardinals. Mayfield found themselves down 7-0 after two innings before their offense got in gear. The Wildcats would score 8 unanswered runs before Mentor tied the game up, sending it to extra innings. A game-winning RBI single by Ethan Santora in the top of the 10th inning advanced Mayfield to the Canton Regional. The News-Herald

Behind another strong pitching performance by senior Jason Stidham, Anthony Wayne moves on to the district final where they will face Perrysburg. Stidham only allowed one hit yesterday as the Generals were victorious 4-0. Stidham (6-2) will not start in tomorrow's district final game against Perrysburg, but there's a chance he'll be used in relief, said Generals coach Mark Nell. Mike Frank, who did not play yesterday, will be on the hill. Stidham did his part on offense two as he had the game's only extra based hit in the fifth inning. The Toledo Blade

Check back each and every weekday for the top prep headlines from across the state. Here are a list of summaries from some of the major stories around Ohio for Wednesday, May 21st:

Track and Field: Luttrell twins out to defend state D-III titles

Dayton Christian twins John and Walter Luttrell are preparing for the track and field postseason as the goal of defending their state titles is in sight. The twins join a handful of other area athletes in their quests for state individual and team titles with this week's district meets at Welcome, Troy and West Milton. The top four advance to next week's regionals. Those top four qualify to the season-ending state meets at Columbus on June 6-7. Dayton Daily News

Softball: Eastlake North downs Willougbhy South in district final

Rivals North and South were playing in Eastlake for the district title for the second year in a row. And for the second year in a row, North celebrated a victory. Thanks to Courtney Dwyer's bat and Becky Fortuna's arm, the North softball team moves on to regional play where they will face Brunswick at the University of Akron. The News-Herald

Baseball: Watkins' run of district titles comes to end

In a district semifinal yesterday, Watkins Memorial came up short to Zanesville, 4-3. With the score tied at 3 in the bottom of the seventh, Zanesville's Colten Maxwell reached on a two-out error to score Shayne Miller with the game-winning run. Watkins left a total of five runners on base during the next two innings against Zanesville starter Cole Hudson before he was removed in the seventh after a one-out walk to Sean Fannin. The Newark Advocate

Central Catholic overcame an early two-run deficit to overtake Chippewa with an 8-4 district championship win. The next stop for Central Catholic - now 26-3 - is the regional semifinal next Thursday afternoon at 5 against Struthers District champion Youngstown Ursuline. Alex Myers (9-0) got the win for the Crusaders, thanks to lots of offensive help by Chris Snoppel, Mike Roman, Michael Marzec, and others. The Independent

The Premier Athletic Conference meet at Chardon came down to a gutsy performance by North's Brian Carrigg. Though he was still recovering from a sprained ankle from a couple weeks ago, Carrigg won the 400 and was the anchor of North's winning 4x400 relay team. North shared the PAC meet with Willougbhy South and it was the Ranger's first meet title since 2002. The News-Herald

Miamisburg's Michael Willey picked up four wins in the divisional portion of the Greater Western Ohio Conference track meet on Wednesday. On Friday, he will go head-to-head with Sidney's Jordan Goffena in the 110- and 300-metter hurdles. Willey (14.86 in the 110 and 38.59 in the 300) won the GWOC North hurdles titles while Goffena (14.77 in the 110 and 38.70 in the 300) did the same in the South. Dayton Daily News

Tony Pope hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning Wednesday to lead the Lowellville High baseball team to a 5-3 Division IV tournament victory over Columbiana at Cene Park. Lowellville (18-6) will meet the winner of the McDonald-Jackson-Milton game in a district semifinal Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at Cene Park. In other tournament action, Springfield defeated Leetonia, Ursuline beat Grand Valley, and East Palestine run-ruled United. The Vindicator

Gallia Academy utilized a pair of two-run innings and a strong pitching performance by Jeff Golden to defeat Athens 5-1 in a Division II baseball sectional tournament game at Memorial Field on Tuesday. The victory advances the Blue Devils to the sectional finals for the third straight year. Golden was a big key for the Blue Devils as he went the distance on the mound and scattered six hits while striking out nine, walking three and hitting one. Athens Messenger

In the finals, a freshman (St. John's Jesuit freshman Ryan Jorgensen) avenged an earlier loss to defeat Brown, 6-1, 6-4 in the title match. Another freshman making noise is Ottawa Hills freshman Evan Bechtel. Bechtel has a16-2 record this season at No. 1 singles. Brown, Jorgensen, Bechtel, and the rest of the area are getting things in gear for the sectionals scheduled to get under way today. The Blade

Having the deepest pole vault team in the state has its advantages and disadvantages. Centerville's trio of pole vaulters (senior Dave Sweeterman and juniors Nick Arnold/Bryan Miller) can all clear 14 feet. One disadvantage is that the Elks can only send two of their pole vaulters to the postseason, leaving one very talented athelte having to watch as his teammates compete at next week's district tournament. Second-year vault coach Scott Marquardt is mostly responsible for this leaping lunacy. It'll be his call on who jumps. Dayton Daily News

Check back each and every weekday for the top prep headlines from across the state. Here are a list of summaries from some of the major stories around Ohio for Thursday, May 8th:

Football: St. Xavier/Colerain Headline Cincinnati Football Event

For the last 11 years in the Cincinnati-area, the prep football season has been kicked off by the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown. Today, Tom Gamble (organizer of event) will announce the full schedule for the opening week showdown. While the full schedule, dates, and times haven't been released yet - one thing is certain: St. Xavier vs. Colerain. The two teams have combined for three of the last four state championships and it will be their fifth meeting (including playoffs) since the 2005 season. The Enquirer

Softball: Elmwood's Brittany Dauterman

For three seasons Elmwood softball standout Brittany Dauterman shared her team's pitching duties with Kayla Chapman. Now that Chapman has been graduated for almost a year, Dauterman has been left to carry the pitching duties alone. Dauterman has a 0.40 ERA with 235 strike outs in 104 innings while posting a 15-0 record. The senior will pitch for the University of Findlay next spring. Toledo Blade

At the same time, she's on track to earn both her high school degree and an associate degree from Lorain Community College in June 2009.
Check back each and every weekday for the top prep headlines from across the state. Here are a list of summaries from some of the major stories around Ohio for Tuesday, May 6th:

Baseball: Cincinnati St. Xavier sweeps doubleheader with rival Elder

In a double-header battle between two Greater Catholic League foes, St. Xavier swept Elder by scores of 3-1 and 7-1. Ollier pitched the 10th and 11th innings in the completion of a suspended game from last month, which the Bombers won 3-1, and returned to the mound to start St. Xavier's 7-1 win in the nightcap. Elder came into this game ranked No. 4 in the state. Fellow GCL member Moeller is currently No. 6, but St. X was unranked. St. Xavier senior pitcher Richie Ollier allowed four hits in a total of six innings over two games. The Enquirer

Softball: Hebron Lakewood Defeats Heath

Lakewood, coming off their first loss in 22 games, picked up a huge 7-3 victory over Heath (11-10, 5-6) to clinch at least a share of the Mid-State League-Ohio Division title. The Lancers can clinch an outright title tonight with a win over Bexley. Leading the way for Lakewood (22-1, 9-1) was Lindsay Barrett who hit a two-run double and a two-run homer to propel the Lancers to victory. Lakewood pitcher Alissa Birkhimer pitched well enough to get the win, her 21st of the the season. Newark Advocate

Softball: Margaretta stuns Oak Harbor

In a game that shook up the Sandusky Bay Conference standings, Margaretta defeated Oak Harbor 2-1 behind a strong pitching performance by Courtney Parr. The Margaretta win dropped the Lady Rockets into a tie with Perkins for second place at 7-2, one game behind front-running Clyde at 8-1. Parr (5-10) went the distance for the win, allowing an earned run on the two sixth-inning hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks. Liz Weber countered by allowing two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks for Oak Harbor. Sandusky Register

Baseball: Massillon Washington falls to Warren Harding

The Massillon Tigers were their own worst enemy in a 3-2 loss at Warren Harding Monday afternoon. A pair of Massillon errors led to all of Warren Harding's runs. The Tigers outhit the Raiders, 6-5, but it was defense that was the deciding factor. Matt Skelly was the only Tiger with multiple hits, as he finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Mike Clark also drove in a run for Massillon. The Independent

Football: Massillon Names New Head Coach

The Massillon Tigers have a new football coach. After weeks of speculation that former Nordonia coach Jason Hall would be named the next Tiger coach, it finally became official at a special meeting of the Board of Education last night. Hall becomes the 32nd head coach in Massillon's history as he replaces Tom Stacy, who departed in February to become the head coach of Green High School. Massillon superintendent Fred Blosser made the recommendation to the board, which approved it 5-0. Massillon will be Hall's fourth team since 2002. The Mount Union All-American guided two programs (Ravenna Southeast and Lyndhurst Brush) to their first playoff appearance.
St. Edward basketball coach Eric Flannery, fresh off taking the Eagles to the Division I state final, has been named an assistant coach for the Jordan Brand Classic game. The game, featuring some of the nation's premier high school seniors, will be played on April 19 at Madison Square Garden in New York and televised live by ESPN2. Flannery's graduating forward Delvon Roe was invited to the game, but he is unable to play after an injury that kept Roe out for nearly the entire season. The Plain Dealer

The Cincinnati Enquirer names their 2008 winter sports all-stars. Amber Gray (Lakota West) and Yancey Gates (Withrow) lead the winter sports all-stars as girls' and boys' basketball player of the year, respectively. Gates will continue his basketball career at the University of Cincinnati and Gray will be playing for the 2008 NCAA champions in Tennessee. Orlando Scales was the wrestler of the year. Craig Sherrill (Elder) and Amy Wormus (McAuley) were the bowlers of the year. Swimmers of the year are Jim Barbiere (St. Xavier) and Danielle Jansen (Mason). The Enquirer

The Rockets, who allowed just six runs while going 26-2 last season, posted their fourth shutout this year. The Enquirer

The Rogers junior wants to stake claim on a state high jump title that has eluded him the last two springs. During the indoor track season, Kynard jumped a personal record jump of 7 feet, 3¾ inches. Only six others in the country -- amateur and professional -- have jumped higher this year. Jesse Williams, who jumps for Nike, owns the top mark this season by clearing 7-7¼. Kynard is the only one of the group still in high school. The Toledo Blade

She holds school records in both events and was an All-Ohioan in the 300 hurdles at last year's state meet. The hurdles are Wohlheter's specialty, but she is becoming one of the top 400-meter runners in Stark County.
Check back each and every weekday for the top prep headlines from across the state. Here are a list of summaries from some of the major stories around Ohio for Wednesday, April 9th:

Track and Field: Pole Vaulter Tommy Marks

Huber Heights Wayne senior pole vaulter Tommy Marks set a personal best by clearing 15 feet, 6 inches at the Warrior Relays yesterday. Marks finished second in the state indoor competition by clearing 14-6. Marks, a University of Cincinnati recruit, will be one of the athletes to watch as the outdoor state competition goes down at Jesse Owens Stadium in Columbus later in the season. Ironically, Marks' effort isn't even a school record: Les West registered the state's first 16-foot jump in 1975. Dayton Daily News

The Firebirds, trailing 4-0 and down to their last strike, rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lakota West senior Matt Foor had a two-run pinch hit double to tie the game.
League movement has been contagious recently in Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties as Painesville Harvey, Grand Valley, and Ledgemenont all decided to leave their respective conferences. Harvey left the Northeastern Conference after 20 years for the Chagrin Valley Conference, a huge small-school league with three divisions. Grand Valley left the CVC and Ledgemont left the Eastern Suburban Conference to join the Northeast Athletic Conference. Harvey has been fiercely loyal to the league with which it filed a discrimination lawsuit just to join back in 1987. With Harvey joining and Grand Valley departing, the CVC maintiang their 18-team conference that is broken up into three six-team divisions. The News-Herald

Check back each and every weekday for the top prep headlines from across the state. Here are a list of summaries from some of the major stories around Ohio for Tuesday, March 25th:

Boys Basketball: After 643 Wins, Elyria's Bob Walsh Retires

The legendary coach Bob Walsh has decided to retire after 42 years of coaching basketball at five Lorain County high schools. Walsh, 70, began his career in 1966 at Clearview. After 16 years with the Clippers, he spent 11 at Oberlin, six each at Vermilion and Elyria Catholic before finishing his career with three seasons at Elyria. Walsh guided Elyria to the teams' best finish in 31 years. He won two state titles (Clearview in '74 and Oberlin in '86) along with 19 conference championships and 11 distirct titles. Walsh's magnificent career ended with a 643-301 career record, and his win total is fifth all time in state history. Plain Dealer

Whiteford Senior Basketball Player Makes a Name in Rodeo

Cody McCartney, a senior at Whiteford, is a typical teenager with many pairs of shoes. You could've found him this past winter in his basketball shoes running up and down the hard floor collecting rebounds for Whiteford. The 6-foot-1 McCartney led the team in rebounding this past season. If you find Cody on other nights of the week, you might find him wearing some cowboy boots. McCartney is an accomplished calf roper and has been serious about the rodeo since he was 13. McCartney became the youngest person to qualify for the International Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City last January and has received as many as six scholarship offers for rodeo from colleges that include Southwestern Oklahoma, Southeastern Oklahoma, and Southern Arkansas. His father, Jim, is a verteran calf roper. McCartney practices every day and will often compete during the weekends and on school breaks all across the country. Professional calf ropers can earn up to $300,000 a year, and rodeo is one of the only NCAA-sanctioned sports that allows student-athletes to earn prize money during college. The Toledo Blade

Boys Basketball: Fariless' Jordan Jennings is Headed to Ashland

Fairless High School's Jordan Jennings has given a verball commtiment to continue his basketball career at Ashland University, a Division II school. Jennings is the two-time PAC-7 Player of the Year and led Stark County in assists per game with seven. The 5-foot-9 Jennings averaged 20.7 points per game this past season and set numersou school records including single-game points (54) and career 3-pointers (203). Jennings' career scoring total (1,158 points) is second all-time at Fariless. Canton Repository

Baseball: Massillon's New Coach, Ted Guscroff

The Massillon Washington baseball team will be working in a new head baseball coach to go along with many first time everyday players. Ted Guscoff is replacing Mike Dobran, who went 18-8 in his final season as the Tigers' baseball coach. Chris Willougbhy and Steve Yoder will lead the pitching staff and provide it with some needed experience. Phil Van Ryzin (shortstop), Mike Clark (outfield), and Corey Hildreth (catcher) are the only other Tigers who saw significant playing time last season. Guscoff has been known as a coach that produces offense, and this year's Massillon baseball team would certainly like to see a lot of runs in 2008. The Independent

Jared Hall, a senior standout for Cleveland Heights' track team, enters his final prep season with a lot of buzz surronding himself and the Tigers. Hall is the defending Division I 800-meters state champion and he is hoping to lead the Tigers to a Division I team title later this spring. Since Hall's freshman season, he has knocked off 26 seconds off his 800 time. Hall also anchored Cleveland Heights' state-record winning 4x800 team. Last season, Cleveland Heights finished second to Cleveland Glenville. This year Hall hopes to lead his team to a state championship in track and field. The futue Ohio State athlete maintains a 3.1 grade-point average to go along with his excellence in his sport. The Plain Dealer

Check back each and every weekday for the top prep headlines from across the state. Here are a list of summaries from some of the major stories around Ohio for Wednesday, March 19th:

There are several interesting stories across the state in regards to prep football coaching, including news on former, current, and future head coaches of Ohio high school football programs.

Football: Nordonia's Jason Hall on Massillon's Radar Screen

One name that continues to pop up in the search for Massillon Washington's next football coach is Jason Hall. The current Nordonia coach has had plenty of recent success since graduation from Mount Union College in 1998. In six seasons he has compiled a 38-27 record with Ravenna Southeast, Lyndhurst Brush and Nordonia. He took all three of those teams to the playoffs. In the cases of Southeast and Brush, it was Hall that took both teams to their first ever playoff appearance. Despite Nordonia graduating numerous starters after the 2006 season and moving up into Division I, Hall took the Knights to the regional semifinal in Region 2 in 2007. The Independent

Football: Keith Grabowski leaves Brush for Brookside

Grabowski leaves Brush after only one season in which the Arcs went 1-9. Before coming to Brush, Grabowski was on the west side (he resides in Avon Lake) as he lead Amherst to a 23-9 record at Amherst from 04-06. Grabowski wanted to be closer to home, which the Sheffield based high school is. The Plain Dealer

The Cincinnati Moeller football program is one of the most elite in the midwest. Bob Crable was released in November of his duties as head football coach, will continue coaching on a part-time basis at the College of Mount St. Joseph during spring drills. Crable, a former Moeller and Notre Dame All-American linebacker, will coach his former position during the spring workouts. Crable was dismissed as Moeller coach following the 2007 season, after compiling a 48-30 record in seven seasons. He was replaced by John Rodenberg, a former head coach at McNicholas, Covington Catholic and Roger Bacon. The Enquirer

Check back each and every weekday for the top prep headlines from across the state. Here are a list of summaries from some of the major stories around Ohio for Monday, March 17th:

There are many high school basketball all-star games across Ohio that follow last weekend's state tournament. Below are previews of just a few of those games:

Boys Basketball: Al Beach Classic

The best talent from the Youngstown Valley area will play in the Al Beach Classic on Wednesday at Youngstown Boardman High School. The girls all-star game will start at 6 pm and the boys will follow shortly after. Tickets are $6 at the door. The players come from schools like Warren Harding, Canfield, Boardman, Austintown Fitch, Poland, Warren Howland, Youngstown Ursuline, and several others. There will even be a three-point and slam dunk competition. The coaches for the boys White Team are Will Klucinec (Salem) and Jim Goske (Boardman). The coaches for the boys Red Team are George Lanterman (Lakeview) and Mike Karr (Southington). The coaches for the girls White Team are Shawn Hammond, Brookfield, and Mark Yoder, Maplewood. The coaches for the girls Red Team are Pat Pavlansky (Canfield) and Matt Reel (South Range). The Vindicator

An all-star game at Lakeland Community College in Lake County will feature some of the top senior talent in the Willoughby News-Herald coverage area. The games (boys and girls) will be held in the afternoon on Saturday, April 5th. The boys all-star game is loaded with All-Ohio talent. Future Akron Zip guard Alex Sullivan of Riverside (All-Ohio 3rd team) and Youngstown State recruit Ashen Ward of Cleveland VASJ (All-Ohio 3rd team, DIII Player of the Year in 2007) are the biggest college recruits. Other big names include Mentor's Joe Meyer (1st Team All-Ohio in DI), VASJ's Nate Barnes (DIII Player of the Year in 2008), and Harvey's Rayshwan Journigan (1st Team All-Ohio in DII). The News-Herald

Boys Basketball: Ohio vs. West Virginia

The Ohio Valley in the Steubenville area features some very close borders between the Buckeye State and the Mountain State. On March 30th, the annual Samuel A. Mumley OVAC All-Star Basketball Game will be held at Ohio University-Eastern. The Ohio boys side is being coached by Indian Creek's Joe Dunlevy, Shadyside's Ed Andes and Bridgeport's Donnie Cash. Martin Ferry's Derek Edwards, Meadowbrook's Phil Biggs, Buckeye Trail's Brock Davis, Indian Creek's Jim Wood, and Wellsville's Zane Carter round off the All-Ohio talent for the Buckeye team. Steubenville Herald Star

Check back each and every weekday for the top prep headlines from across the state. Here are a list of summaries from some of the major stories around Ohio for Monday, March 17th:

Football: Massillon Washington Still Without a Coach

The Massillon Tigers, the state's all-time winningest football program, is still without a head coach. The February 12th departure of Tom Stacy to Green High School has left the administration on the search. The Massillon job is right behind the Browns, Bengals, and Buckeyes for most prestigious gridiron coaching jobs in the great football state of Ohio. The committee to find a new coach has not set a deadline on the new hire. Many coaches (including several from out of state) have applied for the position. The Independent

Boys Basketball: Chillicothe Still Buzzing

The Chillicothe team and community are still on cloud nine after their impressive tournament run that ended with a Divsion II state championship this past Saturday in Columbus. Their thrilling overtime victory over Toledo Libbey (featuring Mr. Basketball William Buford) was the most entertaining game of the weekend at Value City Arena. Anthony Hitchens, Ray Chambers (the Chillicothe hero that nailed the final shot as time expired to win the state title), and the rest of the Cavaliers deserve all of the attention they received. Chillicothe Gazette

Boys Basketball: Cleveland Area Teams Have Bright Future

Three teams from the Greater Cleveland area (Lakewood St. Edward, Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph, and Bedford St. Peter Chanel) all made the boys basketball state tournament this past weekend. Despite their accomplishments throughout the season and tournament, it had a dissapointing ending for all three as they came up short of their quests for state championships. Chanel and VASJ fell in state semifinal games and St. Edward lost in the Division I final this past Saturday night. St. Edward and VASJ were starting all seniors, but there is some returning youth that could help the Eagles and Vikings have another succesful season. Chanel started all juniors this season and should be the early favorite to win a state title in 2009. The Plain Dealer

The 20th annual Plain Township Rotary Stark County vs. Summit County All-Star Basketball games will be played Wednesday at Malone College. The proceeds (cost is $6) will go to scholarships and Plain Rotary community projects. The girls game will start at 6:30 pm and the boys will follow shortly after. Canton Repository

Sports: Youngstown High Schools to leave the Federal League

Youngstown area high schools Boardman and Austintown Fitch are returning to the legendary Steel Valley conference beginning in the 2009-10 sports season. Boardman and Fitch left the SVC to join the Federal League, consisting of primarily Stark County schools such as Canton McKinley, North Canton Hoover, Massillon Perry, etc. The travel costs were part of the concern for leaving the Federal League. The new SVC, which will lose Youngstown parochial schools Cardinal Mooney and Ursuline, will consist of Boardman, Fitch, Warren Harding, Youngstown East, and Youngstown Chaney. The Vindicator

Chase Stingel's three pointer from the corner with 0.5 seconds left gave Garaway a 50-47 victory over Villa Angela-St. Joseph in a Division III State Semifinal Friday morning in Columbus.

In a back-and-forth affair pitting the co-Ohio Division III Players of the Year, VASJ's Nate Barnes and Garaway's Tyler Gerber, it was Stingel who stole the show. The senior guard finished with a game-high 16 points (6-8 FG, 4-6 3pt).

With 5:30 to play in the game, VASJ took their first lead since early in the second quarter on a three-point play by senior guard Brian Jenkins at 45-44. The pace then slowed to a crawl, as each team went scoreless over the next four minutes.

Barnes' two free throws extended the VASJ lead to 47-44 with 1:33 remaining, but Stingel's deep three pointer on the ensuing possession hit nothing but net, deadlocking the game at 47 a piece heading into the final minute and foreshadowing things to come.

VASJ Head Coach Dave Wojciechowski decided to hold the ball for the final shot, but senior forward Ashen Ward lost his dribble out of bounds with 13.4 seconds left, turning the ball back over to Garaway for the final memorable possession.

The teams traded buckets throughout most of the opening quarter thanks to some ferocious offensive rebounding. VASJ pulled down five on the offensive glass in the first four minutes while Garaway responded with three offensive boards.

The offense picked up in the final two minutes of the first stanza. After Tyler Gerber and Ashen Ward traded 3-pointers, Stingel nailed a trey from the left wing to give Garaway a 12-9 lead. But VASJ responded quickly, as Ward dished to 6-foot-7 center Klein Harper, who flushed home a two-handed dunk to cut into the Pirates' lead as the first quarter ended.

The Vikings regained the lead 17-14 on two consecutive slams by Harper to open the second quarter. The lead didn't last long, however, as Gerber nailed a three-pointer and was fouled on the shot. His free throw completed the four-point play and the Pirates were back on top 20-17 with 4:38 to play in the first half.

Gerber staked the Pirates to a 30-25 advantage with 1:47 left with his third three-pointer of the half. An impressive drive to the basket by Garaway's 6-8 freshman Paul Honigford tacked on two more.

Ashen Ward closed out a furious final two minutes of play with his second three-pointer of the first half, cutting the VASJ deficit to 32-28 at the half.

Garaway couldn't shake VASJ, who continued to hang around thanks to Ward's stellar play. He drilled a three and hit a pull-up jumper from the right baseline to trim Garaway's lead to 38-37 midway through the third.

Junior David Gerber, younger brother of Tyler, sank a layup to push the Garaway lead to 42-39 with under 30 seconds remaining in the third. But VASJ tied the game heading to the fourth on a deep three-pointer by Barnes right before the horn sounded.

VASJ, who was making their eleventh state tournament appearance in school history, entered the game ranked seventh in the state. They close their season with a 21-5 record.

Third-ranked Garaway (24-3) will take on the winner of the Anna-Ottawa Glandorf semifinal matchup on Saturday for the Division III State Championship.

Along with his success on the basketball court, Buford carries a 3.2 grade point average. Buford narrowly won the award over his future Ohio State teammate, B.J. Mullens of Canal Winchester.
There are small high schools, then there is New Knoxville. The undefeated Rangers (25-0) have one of the smallest enrollments in the state. According to the latest OHSAA enrollment figures for 2009, New Knoxville has 59 boys in grades 10-12. The junior and senior class combined features a total of only 32 boys. The New Knoxville community, which is an area of 907 people, is strongly behind the Rangers. New Knoxville plays Haviland Wayne Trace (21-4) in the final game on Friday night. Another nearby small town that has a boys basketball team playing in Columbus this weekend is Anna. Last weekend they ended North College Hill's three-year reign as state champion. The small community already sold out their 1,800 ticket allotment for their semifinal game tomorrow and are expected to sell 500 more. Dayton Daily News

The Cavaliers (23-2), No. 2 in the final Division II state poll, will play No. 1 Poland Seminary (25-0) on Thursday afternoon at Value City Arena in Columbus. There are plenty of nerves and excitement for coaches, players, parents, and fans. Poland and Chillicothe plays a similar up tempo style headed by their commtiment to full court defensive pressure. Chillicothe coach Gary Kellough believes that turnovers will be the difference for his Cavaliers. Chillicothe is led by Akron recurit Anthony Hitchens, a 5-9 guard averaging 21.3 points per game.
Check back each and every weekday for the top prep headlines from across the state. Here are a list of summaries from some of the major stories around Ohio for Wednesday, March 12th:

Basketball: OHSAA to Consider Using Replay

After a couple of controversial fourth quarter endings this past Sunday, the Ohio High School Athletic Association will take a serious look at using video replays to assist game officials. Hank Zaborniak, OHSAA assistant commisioner, said they've been considering it for a few years and he has made contact with the NFHS (National Federation of State High School Association) about the rule. The Division I girls basketball state championship game (Cincinnati Mount Notred Dame/Lakota West) in Columbus and a Division I boys basketball regional championship game (Lakewood St. Edward/Warren Harding) in Cleveland had outcomes in which video replay could have overturned a game-changing decision. The Enquirer

Boys Basketball: Toledo Libbey Prepares for St. Paris Graham

Libbey's head coach, Leroy Bates, tried out for the Toledo Scott basketball team in the mid 1960's, but didn't make the team. Bates then put his focus on wrestling, a sport that Libbey's state semifinal opponent (St. Paris Graham) has national recognition. The fourth-ranked Cowboys will play fifth-ranked Graham to open the boys state basketball tournament on Thursday at 10:45 am. The Division II state semifinal will be played at Value City Arena in Columbus as it kicks off the 86th annual boys state basketball tournament. Coach Bates' team is senior oriented with a starting 5 consisting of all seniors: 6-5 guard William Buford (22.6 points), 6-6 forward Julius Wells (11.7 points), 6-3 guard Brad Sandridge (11.3 points), 6-5 forward Lance Jones (5.6 points), and 6-3 guard Tony Brown (8.4 points). The top sub has been senior Brad Burton. St. Paris Graham is much more youthful as 5 of their top 6 players are juniors or sophomores. Toledo Blade

The list of several Columbus-area conferences and their All-Conference teams include the Columbus City League (North and South Divisions), Central Catholic League, Mid-State Leagues (Buckeye, Cardinal, Ohio Divisions), and the MOAC. Also listed is the girls basketball all-district team. Some of the top players mentioned include Jared Sullinger (Northland), Devon Moore (Northland), B.J. Mullens (Canal Winchester), Nick Kellog (DeSales), Bumpus and Vincent Coleman (Eastmoor Academy), Krystal Stoening (Licking Valley), Whitney Levering (Fredericktown), and Katie Griffin (Fisher Catholic). Columbus Dispatch

Malvern came up just short of a trip to Columbus and the Division IV state tournament when they fell to Bedford St. Peter Chanel this past Monday, leaving the Hornets a little dissapointed. The recognition of individual achievements for players and coaching was not dissapointing for the Hornets. Senior Zak Kapron was named to The Associated Press Division IV All-Ohio boys first team, A 6-foot-6 forward, Kapron averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds per game for the Hornets. Junior Tyler Tucci made the second team and his father/coach, Dennis Tucci shared the state's Coach of the Year honors. Canton Repository

Check back each and every weekday for the top prep headlines from across the state. Here are a list of summaries from some of the major stories around Ohio for Tuesday, March 11th:

Hockey: Lakewood St. Edward Wins State Title Again

St. Edward won their 11th state hockey championship last night with a 3-1 victroy over Gates Mills Gilmour. The Eagles (29-11-3) and Lancers (23-18-1) both had to endure a lot this weekend as the massive amounts of snow in Columbus delayed the state tournament (among many other tournament games in basketball) a day as they played the championship game on a weekday, rather than on Sunday. The Eagles had to overcome two of the players being suspended for the final after altercations with Toledo St. Francis players followoing the state semifinal game on Sunday. After a scoreless first period, St. Edward answered with two second period goals to take a 2-0 lead. Forwards T.J. Colvin and John Plagens gave the Eagles the lead they never surrendered. The Plain Dealer

Girls Basketball: Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame Wins Division I Title

It was a battle of Cincinnati-area teams as Mount Notre Dame deafeated Lakota West 69-67 in the Division I girls basketball final. Mount Notre Dame freshman guard Kathryn Reynolds hit a game-winning lay-in as time was expiring, leading MND to their third straight D-I title and fourth in five years. There was some dispute about whether or not the final shot was off before the red light went off on the backboard, but OHSAA assistant commisioner Hank Zaborniak said the ruling on the court will stand. Tia McBride (24), Gabby Smith (14), and Ashley Fowler (11) led Mount Notre Dame in scoring. Ms. Ohio Basketball Amber Gray (23 points, 11 rebounds) and Alexis Rogers (24 points) had huge games for the runner-up, Lakota West. The Enquirer

Girls Basketball: Kettering Alter Wins First Girls Basketball Title

After being delayed for two days thanks to the record snow fall in Columbus, Alter captured the first girls basketball state title in school history. The Knights defeated Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown 60-46. Sophomore Ashley Christie led the way for Alter (25-3) with 20 points. The Knights broke open a close one with a 21-6 game-ending run. Senior Nicole Christie (the older sister of Ashley) and Mary Brunner each added 12 points for the Knights. The younger Christie and Brunner combined for 20 more points than they averaged during the regular season. Hathaway Brown (22-5), the Division II runner-up for the second straight season, were led in scoring by Mylan Woods (14 points) and Alexis Dobbs (11 points). Dayton Daily News

The Versailles girls basketball team nets their first state title with a dominating 51-33 win over Sugrarcreek Garaway as they capped a perfect 28-0 season. Head coach Jacki Stonebraker's sister, Justine Raterman, led Versailles with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Stonebraker's squad overcame Garaway's stingy defense, which held teams to 23.8 points per game, and scored nearly that many as they had a 19-13 halftime lead. Versailles' defense proved to be equally tough as they forced 16 turnovers and held Garaway to 32% shooting. Laura Bardall (18 points) score more than half of the Panthers (25-3) points. The 51 points scored by Versailles was by far the most allowed by Garaway this season. Dayton Daily News

Berlin Hiland played some excellent defense on their way to a 44-37 victory over Columbus Africentric. The Hawks (27-1) won their third title in four years and fourth this decade. Berlin Hiland's defense held the Nubians scoreless for a stretch of over 13 minutes in the second and third quarters. Africentric had a 15-5 lead in the early part of the second quarter before their scoring drought. The Hawks would score 24 straight points and they never gave up the lead. The Columbus Dispatch

Whitmer is making an unlikely return to the Division boys basketball state tournament following their shocking defeat of previously unbeaten Canton Timken. The 62-47 victory at the University of Akron's Rhodes Arena was a pleasant surprise to the Panthers' fans that made the trip last night in a game that was delayed for two days thanks to the snow. Whitmer returns to Columbus for the state tournament for the first time since 1987, a few years before any player on the team was born. Forward Kevin Koger and Antwan Willis dominated the paint as they combined for 26 points and 23 rebounds. Whitmer outrebounded Timken 41-29. Purdue recruit Ryne Smith chipped in 14 points (which included four three-pointers) and guard Jeremy Jones had a game high 15 for the Panthers. Christian Alston paced Timken with 15 points. Toledo Blade

Check back each and every weekday for the top prep headlines from across the state. Here are a list of summaries from some of the major stories around Ohio for Monday, March 10th:

Boys Basketball: Lakewood St. Edward Rallies to Defeat Warren Harding

St. Edward found themselves trailing the Raiders by 17 points before making an unlikely comeback to send the game into overtime. St. Edward's senior point guard Frankie Dobbs sent the game into an extra session with a cluth three pointer as time expired. Dobbs also had the go ahead basket in overtime with 5 seconds to spare as the Eagles went ahead for what beame the final score of 77-75. St. Edward will play Cincinnati St. Xavier in a state semifinal matchup Friday at Value City Arena in Columbus. Dobbs finished with 20 points and fellow seniors Connor Tillow (21), Justin Staples (12), and Tom Pritchard (7) added to the scoring effort. The Eagles are now in contention for three state titles in winter sports. They already won wrestling, will play in the hockey final tonight, and are two wins away from a basketball state title. The Plain Dealer

Boys Basketball: Toledo Libbey Advances to State

Ohio State recruit William Buford of Libbey was in foul trouble all for much of the regional final against Lexington. Buford still managed to score 20 points while only playing 21 minutes before fouling out with a few minutes in the fourth quarter. The Cowboys closed out the game and defeated Lexington 65-51 to earn the school's fourth trip to the state tournament. With Buford out, seniors Julius Wells (15 points, 12 rebounds), Brad Sandridge (11 points, 7 rebounds), and Tony Brown helped carry the Cowboys to victory. Buford eclipsed the 2,000 career point total with a crowd energizing dunk in the fourth quarter. Libbey (23-2) will face undefeated and top ranked St. Paris Graham (25-0) Thursday morning in Columubs. The Toledo Blade

Boys Basketball: Cincinnati St. Xavier tops Withrow

St. Xavier returns to Columbus as they defeated Withrow 52-51 in the Division I regional title game at Xavier University's Cintas Center. The lead changed 11 times in the fourth quarter before the Bombers' 6-7 forward Walt Gibler made a pair of free throws with 15.1 seconds to play as St. X took a 52-51 lead. Withrow had a chance to at least tie the game with 2.4 seconds remaining, but 6-9 senior center Yancey Gates (who was 4-4 from thre foul line prior to that point) mised both free throws. Gates finished a bitter-sweet high school career (Withrow lost with a last-second layup to St. X in a regional final last season) with 16 points and 6 rebounds. The gifted senior takes his talents to the University of Cincinnati. As for the Bombers, they will meet Lakewood St. Edward in a state semifinal game on Saturday. The Enquirer

Boys Basketball: Pyamatuning Valley's Run Ended by VASJ

It has been 58 years since a boys basketball team from Ashtabula County made it to the state tournament. That streak continues as Pymatuning Valley came up short to Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph on Sunday afternoon at the Canton Fieldhouse. The Lakers (23-2) became the first Ashtabula team since 1984 to reach a regional final. The big and talented Vikings were just too much for the Lakers. With the win, VASJ advances to the state final four for the third year in a row. In 2006 they came up short in the state final against OJ Mayo, Bill Walker, and the rest of North College Hill. Last year a primarily junior squad fell in the state semifinal. Seniors Ashen Ward (30 points) and Nate Barnes (15 points) have suffered dissapointment in Columbus each of the past two seasons. The two experienced guards, along with senior post players 6-7 Klein Harper and 6-8 Dominick Haynes, will play Friday at 2:00 in a Division III state semifinal. The Vikings are seeking their 5th state title since 1991. Star Beacon

Boys Basketball: St. Peter Chanel Overcomes Malvern Crowd

A few thousand fans (the vast majority for Malvern) jammed into the Canton Field House to watch a Division IV regional final between Malvern and Bedford St. Peter Chanel. Many fans left dissapointed as Malvern fell to Chanel, 75-65. The Firebirds closed the game on a 20-5 run to advance to the state tournament later this week in Columbus. With 6:30 left in the game, Malvern gained a 60-55 lead with Trevor Halter's breakaway dunk. The Hornets (24-1) dropped their first game of the season as talented seniors Zak Kapron and Halter end their excellent high school careers (each finished with over 1,200 career points) on a sour note. The Firebirds (16-8) played a very tough schedule that has helped prepare their run to the Final Four. Junior Lamar McKnight led Chanel with 31 points, 16 of which came in the opening quarter. The Firebirds will play Worthington Christian (25-1) on Thursday evening for a chance to play for their first basketball state title since 1999. The Canton Repository

Boys Basketball: Sugarcreek Garaway Advances to Columbus

Garaway jumped out to a 27-15 halftime lead over Columbus Bishop Ready and held off the Silver Knights' late surge to win the Division III regional final, 51-47. The Pirates will meet Cleveland VASJ in a state semifinal in Columbus on Friday morning at Value City Arena. Gateway was ranked third and VASJ seventh in the final Division III AP poll. Garaway was up 11-0 in the first quarter and they never gave up their lead. Ready got within two points halfway through the final quarter, but the Pirates were helped by a strong game from Tyler Gerber (22 points) to seal their trip to Columbus. The Pirates were 17-23 at the free th row line and Gerber hit six of seven in the fourth quarter. The Athens Messenger

Check back each and every weekday for the top prep headlines from across the state. Here are a list of summaries from some of the major stories around Ohio for Tuesday, March 4th:

Boys Basketball: Division I Cleveland Region Preview

After years of sending Cleveland area district champions to the University of Toledo or Akron for regional play, Cleveland State University is now the current regional home for four Division I districts in the area. This will be the first time tournament play is held at the Wolstein Center. The four teams that will be competing for a shot at advancing to the state tournament are Warren Harding, Mentor, St. Edward, and Elyria. A list of players to watch include WGH's Desmar Jackson, Mentor's Joe Meyer, St. Edward's Tom Pritchard, and Elyria's Demetrius Dalton. The Plain Dealer

Boys Basketball: Malvern Routs Columbiana

Lavern eclipsed the century mark last night in a regional semifinal against Columbiana. The Hornets know how to score with the best of them, and they proved that with a 103-67 win last night to advance to the regional final. The Hornets have a trio of 1,000 point scorers in Trevor Halter, Zak Kapron, and Tyler Tucci. The three-headed monster of Halter (32 points, 11 rebounds), Kapron (31 points, 10 rebounds), and Tucci (19 points, 11 assists) was just too much for Columbiana. The undefeated Hornets (24-0) will play in the regional final on Friday against Bedford St. Peter Chanel. The Vindicator

Check back each and every weekday for the top prep headlines from across the state. Here are a list of summaries from some of the major stories around Ohio for Tuesday, March 4th:

Football: Continuity in Coaching at Massillon Proves Difficult

There are no bigger high school coaching jobs in Ohio than the football position at Massillon. The recent departure of former head coach Tom Stacy to Green leaves Ohio's all-time winningest program searching once again for a new coach. Stacy had a very succesful three seasons at the helm, going 26-11 (including 3-1 against rival Canton McKInley) along with a state runner-up in 2005. One problem with hiring a head coach at Massillon is that the position is typically a stepping stone for a coaching position in the college game. Former Massillon and current Ashland head coach Lee Owens echoes the statement that it is tough to gain continuity in coaching at a place like Massillon. Since legendary coach Paul Brown's nine seasons in the 1930's, only Rick Shepas (1998-2004) has lasted more than six seasons as the Tiger's head coach. The Independent

Girls Basketball: Division I and II All-Ohio

The girls Division I and II All-Ohio basketball selections have been released. Brogan Berry, a senior at Dayton Carroll, was a first team selction for the Divsion II All-Ohio team. Last season the 5-foot-9 guard was a second team All-Ohio pick. Berry (14.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 6.8 assists) is headed to play her college ball at Harvard next season. She guided the Patriots (20-6) to the Division II regional for the first time in school history before falling to Kettering Alter, 49-37. Joining Berry on the first team All-Ohio is Sakara House of Springfield Kenton Ridge. House, a 5-9 senior, averaged 19.8 points per game this season. Dayton Daily News

Girls Basketball: Sandusky Perkins Duo Earns All-Ohio Honors

Sandusky Perkins seniors Cierra Bravard and Trisha Krewson were rewarded with plenty of recognition as the girls basketball All-Ohio teams came out last night. Bravard was named the Division II Player of the Year along with Ayana Dunning of Columbus Eastmoor Academy. Krewson was named to the second team All-Ohio. Bravard and Krewson helped the Lady Pirates capture a Sandusky Bay Conference crown and earn the Division II state poll championship. Unfortunately for Perkins, their season ended last Saturday as they fell to Lima Bath in the DII regional final at Ontario High School. Bravard, a 6-4 post who earned first-team All-Ohio as a junior, averaged 21.6 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Krewson averaged 15.9 points per game. Both will be playing at the Division I college level next season as Bravard is headed to Florida State and Krewson will be at Bucknell. The Sandusky Register

Boys Basketball: Bowling Green Regional Preview

After three weeks of boys basketball sectional/district play, 64 district champions have been named across the state. Regional play begins tonight as all 16 remaining Division IV teams in Ohio are playing in their respective semifinals. Bowling Green will be the host of a doubleheader as Plymouth (20-3) takes on Van Buren (19-4) and Wayne Trace (19-4) battles Ayersville (21-2). Wayne Trace and Ayersville are Green Medows Conference rivals and this is the second matchup between the teams. The first game was February 8th in Ayersville as the home team picked up a 58-55 win over Wayne Trace as the win wrapped up a GMC title. Ayersville is led by Logan Wolfrum (14.4 ppg) and Matthew Martin (10.7 ppg). The Raiders counter with Aaron Hockenberry (18.2 ppg) and Riley Linder (11.7 ppg). Plymouth and Van Buren tip off at 6:15 and will be followed by Wayne Trace/Ayersville. The Lima News
