The St. Edward Eagles became known for their double-digit comebacks during their run to the Division I state championship game. They did everything they could to make sure they'd need to do the same Saturday night against Newark.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, Greg Avery had a different idea.

Behind 19 first half points from their star forward, the Wildcats built a double digit lead and took a 33-25 lead into halftime in a game where St. Edward was unable to find little first half offense and senior center Tom Pritchard didn't even record an official field goal attempt until the 7:17 mark of the third quarter. The lone bright spot for the Eagles in the first half was senior guard Mike Hartnett who scored 10 points 4-of-6 shooting.

Avery finished the game with 33 points and 11 rebounds and seemed to have an answer every time St. Edward got momentum.

Examples: Tom Pritchard scores with a foul. Following the missed free throw, Avery hit a jump shot.

Want more? Frankie Dobbs hit a three. Greg Avery drove strong and got to the line where he converted two free throws.

When Tom Pritchard fouled out with 4:43 to go (8 points, 3 rebounds), the only thing keeping Newark from hoisting the trophy was the OHSAA's predilection to wait until the clock reads triple zeroes to start handing out the awards.

Despite early pressure by the Eagles, Newark extended to a 48-36 lead aafter three thanks to eight more points from Avery and Tom Pritchard being sent to the bench with his fourth foul at the 3:17 mark of the quarter.

St. Edward comes up empty for the second straight time in Columbus after losing in the state semifinals in 2007.

Dane Kopp contributed 7 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats. Rahlin Watson added 10.

The Eagles were paced by Frankie Dobbs' 15 points. Mike Hartnett chipped in 12 in the losing effort.

Ottawa-Glandorf jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, rolling to a 62-44 victory over Garaway in the Division III State Championship at Ohio State's Value City Arena.

The state title was the second in school history for the Titans (23-5), who captured the Division II crown in 2004. But this year's team wasn't expected to duplicate the feat. They were ranked tied for 13th in the state and were forced to beat two of the top three ranked teams in Anna and Garaway on back-to-back nights to accomplish the task.

No problem.

"I'm kinda numb right now," said Ottawa-Glandorf Head Coach Josh Leslie at a post game press conference. "I've been renting a home in Ottawa and now maybe I can buy one."

Garaway (24-4) dug themselves a hole early, turning the ball over six times in the first four minutes of the game. Ottawa-Glandorf took advantage of the miscues and jumped out to a 13-1 lead less than halfway into the first quarter.

"We tried to turn them over in transition and get them to play our style," Leslie explained. "If we get up on any team (early) we're pretty tough to beat."

The Pirates settled down to close out the session, hitting four of five shots in the final four minutes of the first and slicing the Ottawa-Glandorf lead to 18-12 after one.

The Jake Meyer show then began, as the reserve forward for Ottawa-Glandorf came off the bench to score ten quick points, including a pair of three pointers and a one-handed dunk, to push the Titans' lead back out to 30-14.

"It says alot about him," stated Leslie when asked about one of his best players coming off the bench. "He's bought into it and our rotation makes us that much better."

Meyer curtailed a 9-2 Garaway run in the final minutes of the first half with his third three pointer, this time from the left baseline with 40 seconds left to keep the Titans' lead in double-digits.

Ottawa-Glandorf shot a blistering 61-percent in the first half and caused 13 Garaway turnovers.

The ten minute haltime intermission didn't seem to cool off Meyer (21 points), who came out firing in the second half. The 6-foot-4 senior scored two quick buckets to help extend the Titans' advantage to 20 points midway through the third period. Classmate Justin Schomaeker, the star of Friday's semifinal win, also added a pair of baskets and finished with 15 points and four assists.

Despite the efforts of freshman center Paul Honigford (12 points, 12 rebounds) and senior point guard Tyler Gerber (15 points, 3 steals), Garaway wasn't able to mount a serious comeback down the stretch. A jumper by Gerber with 2:58 remaining cut the deficit to 13 points, but that would be as close as they got.

It was the second time in less than a week that Garaway hoisted the state runner-up trophy. On Monday, the Pirates' girls basketball team fell to Versailles in the Division III final. They were the only school in the state to have both teams reach the state tournament.

Tony Meyer knew Saturday afternoon would be special.

"Tony said he could drop a couple [threes], so I said 'Go ahead,'" said New Knoxville coach Dan Hegemier.

Meyer shot 4-for-6 on three-pointers, including 3-for-3 in the first quarter, as New Knoxville used the three-pointer early then attacked Worthington Christian inside in the second half on their way to capturing the Division IV state championship Saturday afternoon, 74-52, over Worthington Christian.

"When they just kept dropping for me I was like, 'I just gotta keep shooting,'" said Meyer.

The Rangers shot 7-for-12 from behind the three-point line in the first half but shot just four three-pointers in the second half en route to the school's first state championship.

The Rangers shot 5-for-6 on three-pointers in the first quarter.

But it wasn't just shooting for New Knoxville. The Rangers held Worthington Christian junior Brian Becker to just six points on 2-for-8 shooting. The Warriors shot 37.5% in the second half.

"They have five guys that flat-out understand both sides of the floor," said Warriors coach Kevin Weakley.

Worthington Christian joined the three-point contest in the second quarter, hitting four three-pointers of their own, including three by senior guard Tyler Joseph on his way to 11 points in the second quarter. The Warriors shot 5-for-10 from three in the first half, but were only able to hit on 4-for-15 in half number two, the last a meaningless make at the buzzer.

Worthington Christian was paced by Zach Joseph's 18 and Tyler Joseph's 16.

Five players scored in double figures for New Knoxville, including 16 from junior center Brad Piehl and 12 each from junior forward Caleb Allen and 12 from Meyer.

New Knoxville led 38-29 at the half before outscoring Worthington Christian 36-23 in the second half.

A crowd of 14,498 collectively held their breath as the ball hung on the rim and the buzzer pierced the deafening silence.

Ray Chambers' layup with under a second to play in overtime gave Chillicothe an improbable 70-69 victory over Toledo Libbey in the Division II State Championship at Ohio State's Value City Arena.

In a back-and-forth affair, it took an extra session and the full 36 minutes to determine a winner.

After Toledo Libbey's Julius Wells calmly sank two free thows with 5.1 seconds left to stake the Cowboys to a 69-68 lead, it was the heroics of Chambers and fellow senior standout Anthony Hitchens on the final memorable play.

Hitchens took a short inbound pass from under the Chillicothe basket and blazed his way down the court, weaving around Libbey defenders. At the Libbey free throw line, he delivered a perfect bounce pass to Chambers, whose lay-in bounced around the rim before finally dropping through the cylinder.

"It was crazy, man." said a jubilant Chambers after the game. "I just threw it up there. I thought I missed it."

The game featured two of Ohio's finest in Hitchens and Toledo Libbey's William Buford, recently named Mr. Basketball. The All-Ohioans were like prize fighters, trading haymakers until only one was left standing.

And that was Hitchens.

The electric Hitchens finished with 24 points, six rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Buford ended his high school career in style, delivering 29 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Chillicothe Head Coach Gary Kellough had nothing but praise for the two stars.

"Anthony is just a tremendous point guard," he said. "He's lightning off the dribble and he's got the ability to finish."

"And Buford, well, I'd like to have him on my team," he said with a smile. "He created so many problems for us."

Chillicothe jumped out to an early 7-4 lead, but Hitchens picked up two fouls in the first 2:30.

"I told coach don't take me out," said Hitchens. "I got two cheap ones early but I didn't want to be out of the game."

Kellough trusted his star, as Hitchens stayed in the game and remained effective. The 5-foot-9 dynamo tallied 4 points, two assists, and two steals in the first eight minutes but the Cavaliers found themselves behind on the scoreboard.

The pace quickened in the second quarter. Hitchens outran several Libbey defenders on the break and dished to forward Ray Chambers for a dunk to put Chillicothe back in the lead, but Buford responded with a driving layup seconds later and Wells hammered a two-handed dunk off a picturesque feed from Buford to spark a 7-0 Libbey run and 33-24 halftime advantage.

Lance Jones appeared to give Libbey all the momentum with 5:02 left in the third with an impressive driving dunk over a Chillicothe defender to stake the Cowboys to a 14-point lead. But a hustling Ray Chambers cut the Libbey lead to single digits at 44-35 after scooping up an offensive rebound and completing a three-point play several possessions later.

Chillicothe's comeback efforts continued and the Libbey lead dwindled to 49-45 on consecutive three pointers by Hitchens later in the quarter.

Hitchens hit two free throws to pull Chillicothe to within one at 56-55 with under four minutes remaining and then hit a pull-up jumper in the lane to put the Cavaliers in the lead for the first time since early in the first quarter.

"I thought our press energized us," Kellough said. "We were fortunate that when we got down big we were able to fight back and make some plays."

Hitchens no-look dish to Ron Smith under the basket yielded a layup and broke a 58-58 tie with just under a minute left. Ray Chambers added two free throws and Chillicothe led 62-58 heading down the stretch.

Buford wasn't ready to throw in the towel yet and drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the arc with 26.4 left to pull the Cowboys to within one at 62-61.

After Caleb Knights split a pair of free throws, Brad Sandridge stroked a 15-footer from the left wing with 2.4 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

The state title was the first in school history for Chillicothe who ended their season with a 25-2 record.

Kellough thinks its a monumental day for not only his team, but the entire community.

"It's been a long time since the city has had anything like this."

Toledo Whitmer did their best to keep things interesting, but Cody Dennison was too much for the Panthers in the second Division I semifinal of the night. Dennison scored 22 points along with 5 rebounds and 4 assists and hounded Whitmer gunner Ryne Smith on the defensive end in Newark's 63-44 win. The Wildcats will play Lakewood St. Edward in the Division I championship game Saturday night.

Whitmer, down by as many as 21 early in the third quarter, fought back to within 9 thanks to an Antwan Willis and one with 7:47 to play in the game, but Dennison, a 5'10" junior, used a mix of jump shots and drives to keep Whitmer at bay.

Newark pulled away from the Panthers in the second quarter when they outscored Whitmer 13-3 in the final 3:06 of the first half. Dennison scored 10 of his points in the frame, while senior Greg Avery (16 points, 9 rebounds) scored eight in the quarter. Newark carried a 36-22 edge into halftime.

The Wildcats' Rahlin Watson, in foul trouble early in the 1st quarter, finished with 13 points.

Early on, Newark was able to get to the rim with relative ease in the opening quarter. The Wildcats led 13-8 after one. Whitmer had closed to 9-8 with just over a minute to play, but a Will McCoy (2 points, 4 rebounds) basket and Dennison steal and driving lay up kept Newark on top.

Whitmer was paced by Willis' 16 points and 9 rebounds. Smith added 12, but shot just 4-for-12 from the field.

There couldn't have been two points sweeter to Tom Pritchard.

Battling frustration, jawing from anyone on the floor wearing blue and a raucous St. Xavier student section, Pritchard scored 26 points, the exclamation point a fast break dunk with 1:32 to play in the ballgame and a shout for Xavier's Walt Gibler upon landing.

"I wanted to throw it down," said Pritchard, "get my team some energy to finish the game."

Walt Gibler scored 24 points for St. Xavier, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles advance to play the winner of Toledo Whitmer vs. Newark in Saturday night's Division I state championship game following their 68-59 state semifinal victory.

Pritchard and the Eagles turned a 35-25 first half deficit on its head in the third quarter thanks to a 13-0 run behind the play of Pritchard (14 rebounds) and Frankie Dobbs (16 points, 5 assists) in continuing their improbable tournament run. St. Ed didn't lead in the ballgame until 2:37 to play in the third when a Tom Pritchard and-one gave them a 40-39 edge. Dobbs then hit a three ball after an X turnover coming out of a subsequent timeout to make it 43-39 St. Edward.

"It was all about attitude," said Eagles coach Eric Flannery of his team's turnaround. "It was all about intensity."

Only a Ryan Shiverdecker (9 points) three with 36 seconds in the quarter helped St. X salvage an otherwise disastrous quarter that ended with them trailing 43-42.

Brad Loesing chipped in 17 for the Bombers.

"We ran into an offensive juggernaut in the second half," said St. Xavier coach Scott Martin.

St. Xavier used a 7-0 run and a plethora of early easy looks inside to jump out to a 17-6 lead. But the Bombers were unable to score over the last 2:59 of the quarter and St. Ed closed the lead to 17-11 at the end of the first frame.

St. Edward got as close as three points at 21-18 in the second thanks to Conor Tilow's personal 5-0 run highlighted by a steal and fast break lay-up. But St. Xavier outscored the Eagles 6-0 over the final 1:46 of the half to take a 35-25 lead into the locker room. The Bombers shot 66% from the field in the first half, highlighted by Walt Gibler's perfect 4-for-4 on his way to 14 first half points.

But the second half told a different story for the Bombers.

Despite being an underdog on paper, Ottawa-Glandorf wasn't going to let records, rankings, or stats tell the story.

Justin Schomaeker scored 26 points and Jake Meyer chipped in with 13 crucial second-half tallies to lead the Titans to a 65-57 victory over Anna in the second Division III semifinal game at OSU's Value City Arena.

Anna, which entered the game boasting a 25-1 record and ranked second in the state, fell behind early and wasn't able to dig its way out of the hole.

Ottawa-Glandorf started out the game on fire, hitting five of their first eight shots and jumping out to an early 10-0 lead 3:23 into the contest. Meanwhile, Anna found the rims uninviting, missing their first ten shots and failing to score until the 3:58 mark of the first quarter.

The Rockets then settled down, hitting five of their next six shots and knotting the game at 16-16 with 5:21 remaining in the second. The Rockets got a spark from reserve forward Zach Clark, who tallied six points and two rebounds in a stint off the bench.

Ottawa-Glandorf pushed their lead back out to double digits at 31-21 with under a minute left behind 6-1 forward Tyler Schomaeker, who knocked down six of his first nine shots, and scrappy guard Taylor Pothast who parlayed three steals into points.

Schomaeker continued his torrid play into the second half, hitting a variety of jumpers and one-handers in the lane to keep the Titans with a comfortable lead. His drive and bucket with 2:48 left in the third quarter gave him 20 points on the game and extended Ottawa-Glandorf's lead to 43-30, their largest of the contest.

It appeared Anna had stolen away the momentum early in the fourth cutting the Ottawa-Glandorf advantage to 47-42. However, reserve forward Jake Meyer sank two consecutive three pointers to push the Titans' lead back to 53-44 with just under six minutes remaining.

Anna refused to fold, fighting its way back into contention. Senior guard Jade Billing nailed a three pointer at the 3:40 mark, cutting the Rockets' deficit to only three points at 55-52.

That would be as close as they would get, as Meyer hit another three-pointer with 2:35 left and put the game out of reach with a layup in the final minute.

Anna, who was making their first ever state tournament appearance, ended their best season in school history with a 25-2 record.

Ottawa Glandorf (22-5), despite never cracking the AP Top 10 this season, will play Garaway on Saturday for the Division III title.

Chase Stingel's three pointer from the corner with 0.5 seconds left gave Garaway a 50-47 victory over Villa Angela-St. Joseph in a Division III State Semifinal Friday morning in Columbus.

In a back-and-forth affair pitting the co-Ohio Division III Players of the Year, VASJ's Nate Barnes and Garaway's Tyler Gerber, it was Stingel who stole the show. The senior guard finished with a game-high 16 points (6-8 FG, 4-6 3pt).

With 5:30 to play in the game, VASJ took their first lead since early in the second quarter on a three-point play by senior guard Brian Jenkins at 45-44. The pace then slowed to a crawl, as each team went scoreless over the next four minutes.

Barnes' two free throws extended the VASJ lead to 47-44 with 1:33 remaining, but Stingel's deep three pointer on the ensuing possession hit nothing but net, deadlocking the game at 47 a piece heading into the final minute and foreshadowing things to come.

VASJ Head Coach Dave Wojciechowski decided to hold the ball for the final shot, but senior forward Ashen Ward lost his dribble out of bounds with 13.4 seconds left, turning the ball back over to Garaway for the final memorable possession.

The teams traded buckets throughout most of the opening quarter thanks to some ferocious offensive rebounding. VASJ pulled down five on the offensive glass in the first four minutes while Garaway responded with three offensive boards.

The offense picked up in the final two minutes of the first stanza. After Tyler Gerber and Ashen Ward traded 3-pointers, Stingel nailed a trey from the left wing to give Garaway a 12-9 lead. But VASJ responded quickly, as Ward dished to 6-foot-7 center Klein Harper, who flushed home a two-handed dunk to cut into the Pirates' lead as the first quarter ended.

The Vikings regained the lead 17-14 on two consecutive slams by Harper to open the second quarter. The lead didn't last long, however, as Gerber nailed a three-pointer and was fouled on the shot. His free throw completed the four-point play and the Pirates were back on top 20-17 with 4:38 to play in the first half.

Gerber staked the Pirates to a 30-25 advantage with 1:47 left with his third three-pointer of the half. An impressive drive to the basket by Garaway's 6-8 freshman Paul Honigford tacked on two more.

Ashen Ward closed out a furious final two minutes of play with his second three-pointer of the first half, cutting the VASJ deficit to 32-28 at the half.

Garaway couldn't shake VASJ, who continued to hang around thanks to Ward's stellar play. He drilled a three and hit a pull-up jumper from the right baseline to trim Garaway's lead to 38-37 midway through the third.

Junior David Gerber, younger brother of Tyler, sank a layup to push the Garaway lead to 42-39 with under 30 seconds remaining in the third. But VASJ tied the game heading to the fourth on a deep three-pointer by Barnes right before the horn sounded.

VASJ, who was making their eleventh state tournament appearance in school history, entered the game ranked seventh in the state. They close their season with a 21-5 record.

Third-ranked Garaway (24-3) will take on the winner of the Anna-Ottawa Glandorf semifinal matchup on Saturday for the Division III State Championship.

New Knoxville started fast in their Division IV semifinal matchup against Wayne Trace and never looked back. The Rangers will play Worthington Christian in the championship game Saturday afternoon following their 62-41 win over the Wayne Trace Raiders.

The Rangers were paced by Ryan VanderHorst's 16 points and 11 rebounds in a game in which the fourth quarter was merely a formality. Aaron Hockenberry led Wayne Trace with 14 points.

New Knoxville finished the first quarter on a 10-2 run, opening a 16-6 lead thanks to a 58% shooting clip in the quarter. The Rangers looked to run off every Wayne Trace miscue as the Raiders opened the game shooting a chilly 25%. Ryan VanderHorst scored 6 in the opening frame.

Wayne Trace closed to within 19-14 midway through the second, but turnovers and missed opportunities put a halt to their attempts at drawing closer by the break. New Knoxville went into the locker room leading 25-14.

Wayne Trace pulled to within 8 on an and-one by New Knoxville's Aaron Hockenberry, but a jumper just inside the 3-point line by Vanderhorst helped spark a 13-0 run to end the quarter with a 46-25 lead.

Brad Piehl added 13 points and 7 rebounds for New Knoxville while Austin Arnett chipped in 11.

Just when Chanel thought they had some momentum, Brian Hecker took it away.

In a half where Chanel did just enough to stay within striking distance of the Warriors, it appeared Jo'Vaughn Brown had given the Firebirds reason to think they could advance past Worthington Christian in the first Division IV semifinal matchup of the night when he split a double team and laid the ball in along with a foul late in the first half. A missed free throw and a 30-foot bomb at the horn from Hecker later and Chanel found themselves back in a nine point hole headed to the locker room.

Behind Hecker's 17 points and 8 rebounds and the sharpshooting of Tyler Joseph (17 points, 5 3 pointers), Worthington Christian advanced to the Division IV state championship game with a 66-58 win over Bedford St. Peter Chanel.

"I have no idea how that went in," said Hecker of the shot. "I didn't even see it go in."

Worthington Christian opened the second half on a 5-0 run to stretch the lead to double digits, where it stayed for most of the third until Brown hit a three late in the quarter to cut Chanel's deficit to eight. Chanel's Arthur Jordan did most of his damage in the third as well, scoring 8 of his 13 points. Worthington's Brady Beals split a pair of free throws for Worthington Christian to stake them to a 51-42 lead after three.

Chanel used an agressive press in the fourth and a Lamar McKnight three from the top of the key to pull within 51-47 with just under 7:00 left. But Warriors' sophomore point guard Zach Joseph made a pair of free throws and set up senior Bob Condon on a backdoor feed to push Worthington Christian's lead back out to 55-47 three minutes into the quarter. Chanel was unable to get closer than six points the rest of the way.

"Just when you thought we were going to get over the hump, we missed a shot or they made a play," said Chanel coach Bernie Tarr of his team's inability to close the gap on the Warriors.

Tyler Joseph paced the Warriors early in the game hitting on three first quarter 3-pointers as Worthington Christian led 19-13 after one.

Chanel managed to not lose much ground in the second quarter but was unable to dent the Worthington Christian lead until Brown's and-one opportunity with 4 seconds left in the half. But Hecker, just like Worthington Christian seemed to all night, found a way to keep the Firebirds just out of reach.

"You don't ever exhale," said Worthington coach Kevin Weakley. "We won't be able to exhale until Saturday night."

Ray Chambers and Anthony Hitchens combined for 55 points and 23 rebounds to lead Chillicothe to a 78-70 victory over previously unbeaten Poland Seminary in a Division II Semifinal.

Chambers led the way with 31 points (13-18 FG) and 17 rebounds. Hitchens chipped in with 24 points, six rebounds and three assists.

The contest was a matchup of the top two teams in the final AP poll. Poland Seminary entered ranked first and Chillicothe ranked second.

The game started on a frenetic pace, as expected. The offensive-minded teams wasted no time pushing the pace and deploying full-court presses. Chambers, a 6-foot-7 senior, scored eight of the Cavaliers' first ten points to stake them to a 12-11 lead after the first quarter.

Poland Seminary continued its smothering full-court trap to claw its way back. Senior guard Ben Umbel, a First Team All-Ohio selection, showed off his scoring ability with seven of the Bulldogs' first eleven tallies.

Hitchens, Chillicothe's standout senior point guard, began to assert his will in a wild two minute strech to begin the second. He hit two pull up jump shots to begin the quarter and dished to Chambers for two-handed dunk with 6:12 left to give the Cavaliers a 18-16 lead.

Chillicothe pushed its lead to 34-21 on two consecutive lay-ins by Chambers and an easy bucket by Hitchens off the break with 58 seconds remaining in the half.

Poland Seminary, which shot a paltry 21-percent from the field in the first half, played the final two minutes of the half without its star Umbel, who suffered an apparent shoulder injury while diving for a loose ball.

The breakneck pace continued into the second half and Chillicothe was able to stretch its lead to 15 midway through the third quarter at 44-29.

Poland Seminary fought its way back, however, and used a 9-0 run midway through the quarter to pull within six. Sophomore guard Niko Fatimus drained a three-pointer from the left wing and Ben Umbel, who returned from injury, scored on an easy lay-in to make the score 44-38 with 2:12 left in the period.

Hitchens was able to curtail the Bulldogs' momentum with a fade-away three-pointer from the corner at the third quarter buzzer, pushing the Chillicothe lead back to double-digits at 51-40.

Poland Seminary, which shot an uninspiring 9-of-35 from 3-point range, wasn't able to get back to within striking distance as a result and Chillicothe rode out the clock to secure the impressive win.

Umbel finished his outstanding career with a gritty performance. He scored 28 points (10-22 FG, 5-10 3PT) and contributed eight rebounds, five assists, and six steals.

Poland Seminary (25-1) lost for the first time all season. The Bulldogs were making their fourth overall appearance in the final four and second in as many years.

Chillicothe (24-2), on the other hand, was making its first state tournament appearance since 1930, the longest drought in Ohio history. They will now play in the first state final in school history.

The Cavaliers will face Toledo Libbey on Saturday for the Division II title.

William Buford scored 21 points and Toledo Libbey held off a resilient St. Paris Graham team to capture a 51-44 victory in a Division II state semifinal at Ohio State's Value City Arena.

Buford, recently named Mr. Basketball, also chipped in 10 rebounds in the victory.

The two teams with contrasting styles felt each other out for most of the first quarter, calming the butterflies and adjusting to a large, raucous crowd. Despite five turnovers in the first stanza, Graham led 13-11 after one.

Buford began to assert his will in the second quarter, hitting a turnaround jumper and sinking a pair of free throws to give the Cowboys a 15-13 lead with 7:06 to play in the second.

Meanwhile, Graham went scoreless for over four minutes in the second in large part due to a smothering Libbey zone defense. They registered their first points of the quarter at 3:43 on a three-pointer from the wing by sophomore forward Ethan Ward. On the next possession, Ward tied the game at 17 apiece, hitting one of two free throws.

Buford, the 19th ranked player in the country, gave the Cowboys a 19-17 lead with a thunderous two-handed dunk with 2:12 to play. After Graham guard Ben Rosenberger hit a difficult three pointer to knot the game at 20, Buford put Libbey back on top 22-20 heading into intermission with a driving one-hander with two seconds left.

The teams shot an identical 8-23 (35%) from the field in the first half. Turnovers also were a factor in the low score, as the teams combined for 15 miscues in the first 16 minutes of play.

The slow pace continued in the third quarter. Rosenberger tied the game at 26-26 with 2:50 remaining in the quarter with his second three-pointer of the game. Ward then put the Falcons back on top a possession later with a 10-foot jumper from the baseline.

Despite struggling mightily from the field, Libbey was able to regain the lead in the fourth thanks to ferocious offensive rebounding by senior forwards Julius Wells and Lance Jones. An intentional foul by Graham guard Casey Crable resulted in two made free throws by Jones, pushing the Libbey lead to 33-28 with 5:48 left in the contest.

A Buford layup off a nice feed from senior guard Bradley Burton gave the Cowboys' a 39-30 lead with just under four minutes to play. On their ensuing possession, Buford found Lance Jones on the baseline who hammered home a two-handed dunk to extend the Libbey lead into double digits.

But St. Paris Graham wasn't finished.

Josh Schuler's 3-pointer with two minutes remaining cut the Falcons' deficit to 43-38. After Buford missed the front end of a one-in-one, Ethan Ward hit his second three-pointer of the game and the Libbey lead dwindled to 43-41 with 1:36 remaining.

That was as close as Graham would get, however, as Libbey was able to hit enough free throws down the stretch to secure the tough victory.

St. Paris Graham, who was making their first appearance at the state tournament, ended their season 26-1. The Falcons were led by Ward, who finished with 14 points and six rebounds.

Libbey, who will take on the winner of the Chillicothe-Poland Seminary semifinal, pushed their record to 24-2. The Cowboys, in addition to Buford, got strong contributions from Lance Jones (10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists) and Bradley Burton (7 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals).

Division II Boys State Basketball Tournament Preview

Some advice for those planning to attend the Division II state semifinals Thursday at Ohio State's Value City Arena...

Don't blink.

Expect wild, fast-paced and hard-fought action as four of the state's top five Division II teams according to the final Associated Press poll square off. Highly-regarded and fourth-ranked Toledo Libbey meets undefeated and fifth-ranked St. Paris Graham in the first game at 10:45 a.m.

In the second game, the state's first and second ranked teams, unbeaten Poland Seminary and Chillicothe square off at 2 p.m.

Libbey features Ohio State recruit and Ohio's Division II co-Player of the Year in William Buford, who will try to lead the Cowboys to their first state crown. First up is a pesky Graham team that's come from seemingly nowhere - that's a wrestling school, isn't it? - and brings an unbeaten record to Columbus.

Poland ran through its Youngstown-area competition during the regular season and district play. The deep, aggressive Bulldogs sealed their trip to state by holding off Lake County Perry and pulling away from Cleveland Benedictine in the regionals, and now face a Chillicothe team that also likes an up-and-down game.

The winners meet Saturday at 10:45 a.m. for the Division II state crown.

Game One: 26-0 St. Paris Graham vs. 23-2 Toledo Libbey

Even when St. Paris Graham completed its first-ever undefeated regular season, not many gave the Falcons a chance to keep winning. With just one senior in a starting lineup that doesn't feature a player taller than 6-foot-3, the Falcons were supposed to run into a team that was too big and too talented to survive.

Hasn't happened yet.

The Falcons overwhelmed 7-foot B.J. Mullens and Canal Winchester in the regional semifinals, then nipped Kettering Alter by a point in overtime in the final as Josh Schuler scored 19 points and Austin Jones added 18.

It's not unusual for eight or more players to crack the scoring column for the Falcons, who will need all the help they can get against a Libbey team that's as athletic as any team still playing in any division.

Buford, also a first-team all-state pick last season, has scored more than 2,000 points during his high school career. He has help from Julius Wells and Brad Sanrdridge - among others - too; the Cowboys held off Lexington in the regional final despite Buford fouling out.

Wells, a 6-foot-6 Marist recruit, will be key to the Cowboys' hopes of establishing an inside presence and exploiting their height advantage. Buford, at 6-foot-5, is a wing player who can score from behind the arc and draw double teams as he attacks the basket.

Game Two: 25-0 Poland Seminary vs. 23-2 Chillicothe

5-foot-9 senior point guard Anthony "Humpty" Hitchens, a first-team all-state pick and University of Akron recruit, leads Chillicothe against Poland's relentless pressure defense.

Hitchens averages better than 21 points per game and is regarded as one of the state's fastest players. If he can beat the pressure he could create layups for 6-foot-7 teammate Ray Chambers, a second-team all-state pick and the tallest player in this game.

Run, run, run. That's the key for both teams.

Poland has a first-team all-state player of its own, 6-foot-3 senior Ben Umbel, and an athletic rotation that goes nine deep. All nine can score, too.

The Bulldogs will first look to attack from behind the three-point line, then set up their fullcourt pressure. In halfcourt sets they'll trap out of a 2-3 zone, looking to deflect passes and force quick shots that lead to transition opportunities.

No, the Cavs didn't run through the state's toughest district and/or regional; not even close, in fact. But Chillicothe's resume includes wins over Zanesville, Cincinnati North College Hill, Dayton Dunbar and one in Value City Arena against Div. I semifinalist Newark. They won't be intimidated by Poland's pressure, but will it wear them out?

This one could be a classic.

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Frankie Dobbs hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime and then stole the ball and made a layup with 5.3 seconds left in the extra period to give Lakewood St. Edward a 77-75 victory over Warren Harding in a Division I regional championship game on Sunday at Cleveland State University.

Harding (23-2) led by 17 late in the second quarter and was still on top when Dobbs hit a layup with 7 seconds left in regulation to cut the deficit to 70-68. St. Edward then fouled Harding's Desmar Jackson. He hit the first free throw but missed the second and the Eagles hurried the ball down the floor with Dobbs, behind the arc and at the top of the key, releasing the shot as the buzzer sounded to send the game to overtime.

With the score tied, the Raiders were killing time when Dobbs stole the ball and drove from the Harding foul line to score the decisive layup in overtime.

Conor Tilow had 21 points, Dobbs had 20 points and eight assists and Justin Staples had 12 points for the Eagles, who advance to meet Cincinnati St. Xavier (23-2) in a state semifinal Friday at 5:15 p.m. at Ohio State's Value City Arena.

Jackson totaled 21 points, seven rebounds and eight assists for Harding, with Chris Henderson adding 16 points, Sheldon Brogdon 15 and Damian Eargle 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Where: Wolstein Center, Cleveland State University. Call 216-687-9292.

Schedule: Elyria (17-6) vs. St. Edward (19-4), 6:15 p.m.; Mentor (20-4) vs. Warren Harding (22-1), 8 p.m.

Tickets: $8 reserved seats at the door. Ticket is good for both semifinals.

Broadcast: Watch live streaming video of both games on ohioHSsports.com

At stake: The winners meet Saturday at 7:30 p.m., with the regional champion advancing to next week's state final four at Ohio State.

Game Preview

For years, big-school boys basketball during regional week seemed little more than a rumor for Cleveland area fans.

The inconvenient reality was that to follow their favorite teams, fans and students had to make the round trip of more than four hours to the University of Toledo. Many years, two Division I district title teams from The Plain Dealer's seven-county coverage area would trek to the Glass City for a weeknight regional semifinal and, should they win, a return trip for Saturday's title game. The last two years, semifinals were played in Canton, with the winners advancing to the final in Toledo.

Not tonight, and not Saturday, when Cleveland State University hosts premier regional tournament play for the first time. Elyria, St. Edward, Mentor and Warren Harding will play at the Wolstein Center, with the ultimate victor advancing to next week's state final four at Ohio State.

"It's great for Greater Cleveland, when fans get to see some of the best teams in the state," said St. Edward coach Eric Flannery. "It's what the fans deserve."

Who's here?

Elyria (17-6): The Pioneers pile up the fast-break points when they force turnovers and their tough-but-undersized forwards work the boards.

St. Edward (19-4): The Eagles are virtually guaranteed to be in any game they play because of their excellent defense.

Mentor (20-4): The Cardinals are a remarkably poised team even though they start a sophomore, Jaron Crowe, and a freshman, Cole Krizancic, in the backcourt.

Warren Harding (22-1): The Raiders can negate several minutes of erratic play with a scoring binge created by pressure defense and transition offense.

How it got here

"First, it's a nice venue," said Ohio High School Athletic Association assistant commissioner John Dickerson. "We were traveling two teams from the Cleveland area to Toledo. We felt it would work for Cleveland-area schools." Another big factor was the re-configuration of district tournament sites, Dickerson said. Ironically, Warren Harding was the lone team not from Cuyahoga or Summit counties to play at the Warrensville Heights district tournament.

Will it return?

Wolstein Center representatives and the OHSAA will discuss the possibility of the regional tournament's return in 2009, according to Wolstein Center General Manager Ron Willner. Cleveland State's men's and women's basketball teams are in the Horizon League. Willner said the decision about the high school regional may be impacted by potential Horizon League playoff dates.

Tim HarrisonElyria point guard Demetrius Dalton, at 5-9, is the top 3-point scoring threat for
the Pioneers.
Players to watch

Scott Branchick, Mentor, Jr.: The 6-3 forward/guard has emerged as a go-to player in recent weeks.

Sheldon Brogdon, Warren Harding, Jr.: A 3-point and medium-range shooting guard who finishes well on the fast break.

Demetrius Dalton, Elyria, Sr.: The 5-9 guard can get to the basket or hit a flurry of 3s.

Frankie Dobbs, St. Edward, Sr.: A 6-3 point guard, he directs the offense with uncommon savvy and is a standout defender.

Damian Eargle, Warren Harding, Sr.: The 6-7 forward, with 6-8 teammate Chris Henderson, provides rebounding, shot-blocking and highlight-reel dunks.

Mike Hartnett, St. Edward, Sr.: Give him just an instant, and the catch-and-shoot 3-point ace makes opponents pay.

Desmar Jackson, Warren Harding, Jr.: Numerous big-time college programs are eyeing this versatile and exciting 6-5 point guard.

Joe Meyer, Mentor, Sr.: One of the Cardinals' many 3-point shooters, the guard plays a strong floor game and is all but automatic at the foul line.

Tom Pritchard, St. Edward, Sr.: The 6-8 Indiana recruit can post up, shoot from outside, make deft passes, rebound and play defense.

Conor Tilow, St. Edward, Sr.: A 6-6 guard/forward, he is a defensive stopper and can score in many ways.

Four things I think . . . about the Cleveland regional tournament

1. Elyria, a district champion for the first time in 31 years, will make a good showing if it can limit its turnovers. St. Edward, Mentor and Warren Harding are all expert at forcing opponents' mistakes.

2. St. Edward's chances of getting to the final four are better than some anticipated after season-ending knee injuries to Delvon Roe and Alex Sterba. Tom Pritchard and point guard Frankie Dobbs must stay out of foul trouble.

3. Mentor's crisp perimeter passing, great floor spacing and 3-point shooting, along with an underrated defense, give the Cardinals a chance.

4. Warren Harding has more difference-makers than any of the four teams. The Raiders defeated Mentor, 55-34, on Feb. 16, when the Cardinals were without top scorer Joe Meyer, who had a viral infection.

Cleveland Regional Semifinal Preview

The OHSAA's re-shuffling of the Division I regional alignment has delivered a night Cleveland basketball fans have waited for: Cleveland teams playing at Cleveland State for the right to represent the city at next weekend's state tournament.

Warren Harding is the lone party crasher. The Raiders of Trumbull County displayed loads of athleticism and talent in winning the loaded Warrensville Heights District in their first year there, and they enter the regional as the on-paper favorite to advance.

But nothing is expected to come easy in either of Wednesday's games. Though Harding is 22-1 and won at Mentor in the regular season finale just over two weeks ago, Mentor played that game without two key players and is used to playing - and succeeding - at the up-tempo pace Harding prefers.

The first game of the night features 19-4 St. Edward, still rolling along despite losing star forward Delvon Roe early in the year. The Eagles, whose only Ohio loss came to Div. II power Toledo Libbey on a neutral floor, will look to outmuscle an Elyria team that can score with anyone and features four senior starters.

Wednesday's winners meet Saturday night for the right to go to state.

Game One: Elyria (17-6) vs. St. Edward (19-4)

The Pioneers are surprise qualifiers in only one regard; Elyria High hasn't played in the regionals since 1977. But this group has plenty of talent and athleticism, and it avenged two consecutive district finals losses to Strongsville by beating the Mustangs, 68-64, in the district semis.

Elyria rode a hot start to a 98-83 win over Olmsted Falls in last Saturday's district finals, a game that showcased Elyria's strengths. The Pioneers play fast and with balance; all five starters scored in double figures, led by Demetrius Dalton's 26. Elyria scored 56 first-half points in the win.

St. Edward was the clear favorite in the Brecksville District and advanced to CSU with a tougher than expected 60-56 win over Valley Forge in the district final. The Eagles, who trailed entering the final quarter, rode 6-foot-10 senior Tom Pritchard to the regionals. Pritchard finished the Valley Forge game with 27 points and 10 rebounds, and Conor Tilow added 16 points for the Eagles.

Though St. Ed's has played the much tougher schedule, Elyria is battle tested after playing Normandy, Garfield Heights and Brunswick twice and Strongsville three times. But the Pioneers haven't seen a big man like Pritchard, and they'll look to minimize his effectiveness by playing an up-tempo game. The Eagles prefer a halfcourt, grind-it-out game where they'll look to take advantage not only of their size but also their big-game experience.

Game Two: Mentor (20-4) vs. Warren Harding (22-1)

The Raiders, ranked sixth in the final AP Poll, will have their usual advantages in height and athleticism. But the Cardinals are smart, scrappy and streaky from behind the three-point arc; if they get hot, this game could be played in the 80's.

Harding won at Mentor, 55-34, on Feb 16, pulling away with a big fourth-quarter. But Mentor was without senior leader and top scorer Joey Meyer, a rangy shooter who can score in transition and is the focal point of the Cardinal offense when they slow things down.

Six-foot guard Sheldon Brogdon and 6-foot-5 wing Desmar Jackson lead the way when the Raiders run, while a pair of seniors - 6-foot-8 Chris Henderson and 6-foot-7 Damian Eargle - create second-chances and alter shots under the hoop. Brogdon scored 28 and Jackson added 23 in a wild district title win over Cleveland Heights.

Cleveland Heights had some late success with the full-court press against Harding, leaving Mentor to decide how much it will press in a game where pace and rebounding will be key. The Cardinals' keys are to take care of the ball, keep Harding off the offensive glass and get Meyer going from beyond the arc to keep the pressure on the Raiders.

Harding's season has ended the last three years in the Canton District at the hands of teams that eventually went to state; Canton McKinley won it all in 2005 and 2006, and Glenoak was a Final Four team last year. This team is regarded as the best of Warren's bunch and won't be satisfied with anything less than a trip to the Final Four.

ohioHSsports.com will stream live video of both contests starting at 6:10 p.m.

The Division II tournament is well underway with the field of 64 already being whiddled down. The action should be intense, as nine of the top 12 teams in the final AP poll remain alive in the postseason.

Some of those ranked teams are already slated to face each other; let's take a look at the top games on tap in each region.

Fairborn Region

The Fairborn Region is already taking shape as three of four district finals have been played, setting up some interesting matchups in regional semifinal play.

One of the hottest teams in the state is Dayton Chaminade-Julienne, who has put together two impressive back-to-back wins. The Eagles knocked off reigning state champs and third-ranked Dayton Dunbar by two in the district semifinal and proceeded to grab the district title with a 20-point whitewash of Tippecanoe. They now face Kettering Alter, who has advanced in the tournament thanks to solid defensive play.

On the other half of the bracket St. Paris Graham, the fifth-ranked team in the state, captured a district title and now awaits the winner of Canal Winchester-Buckeye Valley. The favorite has to be Canal Winchester, who is ranked at number seven in the state. They have dominated thus far in the playoffs and a matchup against St. Paris Graham should prove to be a dandy.

Of course, Canal Winchester has relied heavily on the skills of five-star center B.J. Mullens. The legitimate seven-footer is the top post player in the state and considered by rivals.com as the fourth-best player in the country. He is averaging nearly 30 points and 15 rebounds per game. With the size and production of a player of Mullen's caliber, Canal Winchester has a chance to win any game.

Bowling Green Region

Eight teams still remain in the region and district titles are up for grabs this weekend. The bottom of the region is absolutely loaded with some of the top talent in the state.

Area rivals will battle in each of th district final games in the lower half of the Bowling Green Region bracket. The first pits fourth-ranked Toledo Libbey against always-tough Toledo Central Catholic. The second matches two state ranked teams from Columbus, eight-ranked Eastmoor Academy and ninth-ranked St. Francis DeSales.

The player to watch in the region is blue chip guard William Buford. The 6-foot-5 Toledo Libbey star is headed to Ohio State next season and is one of the most potent scorers in the state. Like Mullens, Buford has been selected to participate in the McDonald's All-American Game.

Athens Region

This region may not have the same depth or star power as the aforementioned ones, but it does feature the state's second-ranked team and two others ranked in the top twelve in the state.

The favorites in the region is Chillicothe, who stand 20-2 on the season and boast the second-ranked label in Division II. The Cavaliers destoyed Marietta in a district semifinal game in their last outing, easily rolling to a 77-47 victory.

Chillicothe has a fearsome 1-2 punch in 5-foot-9 point guard Anthony Hitchens and 6-foot-7 forward Ray Chambers. Hitchens has already committed to Akron while the ultra-athletic Chambers is hearing from a number of Division I schools.

Vinton County and Dover are the two other teams who are considered threats for the regional crown.

Canton Region

This should shape up to be a very interesting region; one that features the state's top-ranked team and some familiar names.

Poland Seminary finished the season as the state's best in Division II and are one of the favorites to capture the state title. After a 27-point district semifinal win, they now face Beloit West Branch for the Boardman District title.

LeBron James is long gone, but Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary continues to shine on the hardwood. They square off in a great district final matchup against eleventh-ranked Akron Hoban. The Knights needed overtime to survive their district semifinal affair against Buchtel. They will need to pick up the effort against the Fighting Irish.

District championships are up for grabs this weekend as the top boys' basketball teams in Division I square off in an attempt to continue onto regional play.

There haven't been many suprises thus far in the postseason as most of the favorites remain alive in the tournament. The only upset from the final AP regular season poll was a big one, as second-ranked Columbus Northland lost their district semifinal game against Westerville South, 67-59.

Ohiohssports.com looks at the each region and what to watch in upcoming games.

Cleveland Region

In what should shape up to be a very competitive region, the title of "favorite" is still up for grabs. Four of the top 15 teams in the state reside in the Cleveland Region, including sixth-ranked Warren Harding and eight-ranked Cleveland Glenville.

The sleeper, however, could be Lakewood St. Edward. Despite not finding themselves ranked on the AP poll, the Eagles are one of the most talented teams in the state and were considered nationally-ranked by some sources prior to being hit by the injury bug earlier in the year. Blue-chip forward Delvon Roe was lost to a knee injury as well as classmate Alex Sterba.

The Eagles, despite missing some of their top talent, should still be a major factor after playing a who's who of national talent and still having one of the better post players in the state in 6-foot-8 Tom Pritchard, an Indiana recruit.

There certainly won't be a shortage of talent in the region. In addition to Pritchard, tenth-ranked Garfield Heights boasts Wisconsin recruit Robert Wilson while Glenville and Strongsville feature two of the area's top scorers in Rayshawn Goins and Tim Kamczyc, respectively.

Akron Region

The bottom of the Akron Region should be rocking as two of the top teams in the state are on a collision course for what could shape up to be a memorable district final at the Canton Civic Center.

Massillon Perry, ranked 11th in the state, and Canton Timken, ranked seventh in the state, could possibly square off in the district finals. However, each will first have to get by tough opponents in district semifinal affairs. Perry takes on North Canton Hoover while Timken tangles with Massillon Jackson.

Perry boasts one of the top-ranked players in the state in 6-foot-11 center Kenny Frease. The Xavier University recruit is considered among the top post prospects in the country and has backed it up, averaging over 20 points and 12 rebounds per contest.

If Frease and his Perry teammates can advance to the district finals, he will have to battle with another talented big man in Timken's Cameron Howard. The 6-foot-8 center has modest scoring and rebound numbers (6.4 ppg, 6.3 rpg) but is averaging an impressive 4.1 blocks per game.

On the other side of the bracket, two other ranked teams could potentially matchup in district final play. Third-ranked Perrysburg and eleventh-ranked Mansfield Senior are on a collision course in the Bowling Green District. Each easily rolled in their respective first round games, winning by double-digits.

Columbus Region

The state's top-ranked team resides in the Columbus Region despite hailing from the Queen City. Cincinnati Moeller, the defending state champions in Division I, kept their momentum from last year throughout the regular season and will look to win back-to-back titles.

Masterful at slowing down the pace and playing a grind-it-out brand of basketball, the Crusaders put their style on display in a district semifinal win over Trenton Edgewood. They limited their helpless opponents to a paltry 16 total points in a dominating 29-point win. Moeller is led by Division I recruits Matt Roberts (6-foot-9) and Quinn McDowell (6-foot-4).

They will have to continue their staunch defensive efforts in the district final against an athletic Trotwood-Madison squad. The winner will advance to tangle with the winner of the Zanesville-Newark game. Zanesville is ranked ninth in the state.

Cincinnati Region

While Moeller hopes to continue on to the state's capital for regional play, one of the other top-ranked teams in the state will stay in its own backyard in hopes to advance.

Cincinnati St. Xavier, who fell to Moeller in the state championship last season, continued its' strong play this season and is ranked as the number four team in Division I. They would like nothing more to continue on and advance to square-off with their neighborhood rival again in a rematch of last season's title game.

But first, they will have to take care of business in a district final matchup with Clayton Northmont. The Bombers struggled a bit against Loveland in a 49-42 district semifinal win over Loveland. They will turn to talented small forward Walt Gibler, a dangerous wing player who can stroke it from outside and use his 6-foot-6 inch frame inside. Earlier this season, the Loyola Chicago recruit became just the fourth player in school history to reach 1,000 career points.

Here is a list of the top 10 moments from the past decade of the boys state basketball tournament in Columbus.

10. March 28, 1998: He's on fire.

J.T. Hoyng of Sparta Highland starts firing in 3-pointers early and doesn't stop until he's taken out late in the fourth quarter, setting a state tourney record with 8 3-pointers in all as the Scots defeat Cincinnati Indian Hill, 81-60, to win the Division III title. Hoyng scores 36 points, the high individual mark on a weekend remembered for its dominating Cleveland teams, the back-to-back Benedictine champions in Division II and the dominant St. Edward Eagles, who defeated arch-rival St. Ignatius to win the Division I crown.

9. March 27, 1998: The miracle.

Yes, the final state tournament played in St. John Arena had plenty of magic. With just over one second left in a Division II semifinal, Dover forward Ben Swartzwelder catches a full-court baseball pass in traffic from Marcus von Kaenel, spins away from a defender and sinks a 16-foot jump shot as time expires, putting his team in the state final with a 46-45 win over Akron Hoban.

Mike Conley2007 North College Hill Trojans.
8. March 24, 2007: We can play, too.

Minus the star power and above-the-rim game of the departed Bill Walker and O.J. Mayo, Cincinnati North College Hill wins its third straight Division III title, grinding out a 50-45 title game win over Findlay Liberty-Benton. Southwest Ohio wins all four 2007 state titles; Georgetown (DIV), Dayton Dunbar (DII) and Archbishop Moeller (DI) also cut down the nets.

7. March 25, 2006: Double Dogs.

An ultra-talented Canton McKinley team wins back-to-back big-school titles and finishes its run in impressive fashion, blowing out Trotwood Madison, 63-33, in the state final. A loaded senior class, led by Raymar Morgan, Marcus Parker, Todd Brown and Rickey Jackson, stakes its claim to being one of Canton's best, which is no small feat.

6. March 27, 1999: Light it up.

A Division IV final for the ages finally ends after three overtimes, with Worthington Christian topping Fort Recovery, 95-91. Sam Smith leads the winners, ranked eighth in the final AP Poll, with 28 points. Junior post player Chuck Bihn has a game-high 34 for fifth-ranked Fort Recovery, including the basket to send the game to overtime tied at 64.

5. March 19, 2005: The track meet.

Maybe the best Division II state tournament ever ends with Upper Sandusky cutting down the nets, celebrating a 94-86 win over Wooster Triway. Upper Sandusky survived a 95-90 shootout with Dayton Dunbar two days earlier in the semifinal, then overcame a Triway team that won its semifinal, 71-70, over Columbus Linden McKinley, and battled back from as many as 17 down in the state final.

John Kuntz/The PDLeBron James won 3 state titles as a member the fighting Irish.
4. March 25, 2000: The perfect start.

Just a freshman at the time, LeBron James scores 25 points as Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary defeats Jamestown Greenview, 73-55, to win the Division III state title and finish 27-0. The best individual performance of the day, though, comes from 5-foot-1 freshman Dru Joyce, who goes 7-of-7 from beyond the 3-point line for the Irish, who repeated as state champs in 2001 and won the Division II title in 2003.

3. March 25, 2006: The dynamic duo.

O.J. Mayo scores 34 points, and Bill Walker adds 22 points, 10 rebounds and one of the all-time thunderous dunks as North College Hill survives a fight with Cleveland Villa-Angela St. Joseph to win its second straight Division III title, 90-73.

2. March 24, 2007: The thriller.

Dayton Dunbar wins back-to-back Division II state crowns, surviving Upper Sandusky (and 48 points from Mr. Basketball Jon Diebler) in the final to win, 87-85. Three Dunbar players score in double figures, and the go-ahead points come from Josh Benson in the final 1:30 of a classic game that was tied after three quarters.

1. March 23, 2002: The shocker.

An overflow crowd comes to see The King, but Cincinnati Roger Bacon has four players score in double figures, led by Josh Hausfeld's 23, to pace one of the all-time upsets, a 71-63 win over St. Vincent-St. Mary. LeBron James scores 32 points, including a 40-footer at the third-quarter buzzer to bring his team within five headed to the final quarter, but it's not enough to overcome a Roger Bacon team that shoots 53% from the field and wins the rebounding battle, 32-18, to lock up the Division II title.
