Boys Basketball: Canton Timken Remains Undefeated
Last night in a regional semfinal at the University of Akron, Canton Timken defeated Akron Firestone 75-65. The undefeated Trojans (24-0) return to the JAR on Saturday to meet Toledo Whitner in the regional final. A victory would send Timken to the state tournament in Columbus for the first time in 48 years. Timken senior guard Johnie Davis finished with 24 points and 5 assists. Junior forward Chaz Moore led the attack in the post for the Trojans as he went for 20 points, 17 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Canton Repository
Girls Basketball: Hathaway Brown Advances to State Final
Hathaway Brown (Shaker Heights) advanced to the Division II state final with a 68-58 overtime win over Lima Bath. The win put the Blazers (22-4) into Saturday morning's final game against Kettering Alter (24-3). Hathaway Brown's opponent, the Wildkittens, entered the game with a state record 230 three-pointers. Bath nailed five three pointers to start the fourth quarter and took their first lead of the game, 49-48. The game was tied at 56 at the end of regulation. The Blazers outscored the Wildkittens 12-2 in overtime and are in the state championship game for the second consecutive season. The Plain Dealer
Girls Basketball: Berlind Hiland Defeats New Riegel
After being down early, Berlind Hiland kept their cool and routed New Riegel, 58-38, in a Division IV state semifinal game yesterday at Value City Arena. The victory put the Hawks in their 5th state title game and gives them a chance to win their 4th state championship since 2000. Hiland is the state's No. 2 ranked team and they will meet the state's top ranked team (Columbus Africentric) in the state final on Saturday afternoon. Africentric was a 47-42 winner over Convoy Crestview. Hiland junior Karli Mast came off the bench for a game high 16 points, all of which were in the first half. Girls Basketball: Kettering Alter Advances to Title Game
The Knights broke open the state semifinal game against Columbus Mifflin with a 10-0 run in third quarter. Alter never looked back after that on their way to a 45-31 victory. The next opponent for the Knights is Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown. Alter is making their first appearance in the girls basketball state championship game. Mifflin, averaging 72 points before the loss, was overcome by Alter's stiff defense, which had 19 steals for the game. Dayton Daily News
Girls Basketball: Columbus Africentric Defeats Convoy Crestview
The Nubians will play for their second straight state championship after defeating Crestview, 47-42 at Value City Arena on Thursday. Africentric found themselves in a very tight semifinal agains a talented Crestview team. Crestview was only down by 2 with 28 seconds to play, but Ashar Harris sealed the game with free throws. Behind the play of Tyesha Moss (14 points), Harris (11 points, 14 rebounds), and Alesia Howard (14 points), the Nubians will be playing Berlin Hiland at 2:00 on Saturday. The Dispatch
