Whiteford Senior Basketball Player Makes a Name in Rodeo

Cody McCartney, a senior at Whiteford, is a typical teenager with many pairs of shoes. You could've found him this past winter in his basketball shoes running up and down the hard floor collecting rebounds for Whiteford. The 6-foot-1 McCartney led the team in rebounding this past season. If you find Cody on other nights of the week, you might find him wearing some cowboy boots. McCartney is an accomplished calf roper and has been serious about the rodeo since he was 13. McCartney became the youngest person to qualify for the International Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City last January and has received as many as six scholarship offers for rodeo from colleges that include Southwestern Oklahoma, Southeastern Oklahoma, and Southern Arkansas. His father, Jim, is a verteran calf roper. McCartney practices every day and will often compete during the weekends and on school breaks all across the country. Professional calf ropers can earn up to $300,000 a year, and rodeo is one of the only NCAA-sanctioned sports that allows student-athletes to earn prize money during college. The Toledo Blade

Baseball: Massillon's New Coach, Ted Guscroff

The Massillon Washington baseball team will be working in a new head baseball coach to go along with many first time everyday players. Ted Guscoff is replacing Mike Dobran, who went 18-8 in his final season as the Tigers' baseball coach. Chris Willougbhy and Steve Yoder will lead the pitching staff and provide it with some needed experience. Phil Van Ryzin (shortstop), Mike Clark (outfield), and Corey Hildreth (catcher) are the only other Tigers who saw significant playing time last season. Guscoff has been known as a coach that produces offense, and this year's Massillon baseball team would certainly like to see a lot of runs in 2008. The Independent
