There are many high school basketball all-star games across Ohio that follow last weekend's state tournament. Below are previews of just a few of those games:
Boys Basketball: Al Beach Classic
The best talent from the Youngstown Valley area will play in the Al Beach Classic on Wednesday at Youngstown Boardman High School. The girls all-star game will start at 6 pm and the boys will follow shortly after. Tickets are $6 at the door. The players come from schools like Warren Harding, Canfield, Boardman, Austintown Fitch, Poland, Warren Howland, Youngstown Ursuline, and several others. There will even be a three-point and slam dunk competition. The coaches for the boys White Team are Will Klucinec (Salem) and Jim Goske (Boardman). The coaches for the boys Red Team are George Lanterman (Lakeview) and Mike Karr (Southington). The coaches for the girls White Team are Shawn Hammond, Brookfield, and Mark Yoder, Maplewood. Boys Basketball: News-Herald Classic
An all-star game at Lakeland Community College in Lake County will feature some of the top senior talent in the Willoughby News-Herald coverage area. The games (boys and girls) will be held in the afternoon on Saturday, April 5th. The boys all-star game is loaded with All-Ohio talent. Future Akron Zip guard Alex Sullivan of Riverside (All-Ohio 3rd team) and Youngstown State recruit Ashen Ward of Cleveland VASJ (All-Ohio 3rd team, DIII Player of the Year in 2007) are the biggest college recruits. Other big names include Mentor's Joe Meyer (1st Team All-Ohio in DI), VASJ's Nate Barnes (DIII Player of the Year in 2008), and Harvey's Rayshwan Journigan (1st Team All-Ohio in DII). The News-Herald
Boys Basketball: Ohio vs. West Virginia
The Ohio Valley in the Steubenville area features some very close borders between the Buckeye State and the Mountain State. On March 30th, the annual Samuel A. Mumley OVAC All-Star Basketball Game will be held at Ohio University-Eastern. The Ohio boys side is being coached by Indian Creek's Joe Dunlevy, Shadyside's Ed Andes and Bridgeport's Donnie Cash. The Ohio squad features five players who were listed on this past week's All-Ohio squad. Martin Ferry's Derek Edwards, Meadowbrook's Phil Biggs, Buckeye Trail's Brock Davis, Indian Creek's Jim Wood, and Wellsville's Zane Carter round off the All-Ohio talent for the Buckeye team. Boys Track: Northeast Ohio Athletes Perform at National Indoor Track Invitational
Cleveland Heights senior Jared Hall (headed to Ohio State on a track scholarship) finished 10th in the 800 meters at the national invitation track meet. Hall anchored the Tigers' second-place 1,600-meter sprint medley team (Wael El-Halaby, Bryan Underwood, Dontave Cowsette and Hall, 3:31.14). Beaumont senior and Georgetown recruit Emily Infeld also finished third in the 3,200 meters (10:31.26). Medina's Ruben Bellen also performed well at the national track meet in Maryland as he finished second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.57), third in the high jump (6-04.25), fourth in the long jump (20-00.25) and 10th in the 1,000 meters (3:05.35).
