Check back each and every weekday for the top prep headlines from across the state. Here are a list of summaries from some of the major stories around Ohio for Monday, March 17th:
Football: Massillon Washington Still Without a Coach
The Massillon Tigers, the state's all-time winningest football program, is still without a head coach. The February 12th departure of Tom Stacy to Green High School has left the administration on the search. The Massillon job is right behind the Browns, Bengals, and Buckeyes for most prestigious gridiron coaching jobs in the great football state of Ohio. The committee to find a new coach has not set a deadline on the new hire. Many coaches (including several from out of state) have applied for the position. The Independent
Boys Basketball: Chillicothe Still Buzzing
The Chillicothe team and community are still on cloud nine after their impressive tournament run that ended with a Divsion II state championship this past Saturday in Columbus. Their thrilling overtime victory over Toledo Libbey (featuring Mr. Basketball William Buford) was the most entertaining game of the weekend at Value City Arena. Anthony Hitchens, Ray Chambers (the Chillicothe hero that nailed the final shot as time expired to win the state title), and the rest of the Cavaliers deserve all of the attention they received. Chillicothe Gazette
Boys Basketball: Cleveland Area Teams Have Bright Future
Three teams from the Greater Cleveland area (Lakewood St. Edward, Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph, and Bedford St. Peter Chanel) all made the boys basketball state tournament this past weekend. Despite their accomplishments throughout the season and tournament, it had a dissapointing ending for all three as they came up short of their quests for state championships. Chanel and VASJ fell in state semifinal games and St. Edward lost in the Division I final this past Saturday night. St. Edward and VASJ were starting all seniors, but there is some returning youth that could help the Eagles and Vikings have another succesful season. Chanel started all juniors this season and should be the early favorite to win a state title in 2009. The Plain Dealer
Boys Basketball: Stark vs. Summit All-Star Game
The 20th annual Plain Township Rotary Stark County vs. Summit County All-Star Basketball games will be played Wednesday at Malone College. The proceeds (cost is $6) will go to scholarships and Plain Rotary community projects. The girls game will start at 6:30 pm and the boys will follow shortly after. Canton Repository
Sports: Youngstown High Schools to leave the Federal League
Youngstown area high schools Boardman and Austintown Fitch are returning to the legendary Steel Valley conference beginning in the 2009-10 sports season. Boardman and Fitch left the SVC to join the Federal League, consisting of primarily Stark County schools such as Canton McKinley, North Canton Hoover, Massillon Perry, etc. The travel costs were part of the concern for leaving the Federal League. The new SVC, which will lose Youngstown parochial schools Cardinal Mooney and Ursuline, will consist of Boardman, Fitch, Warren Harding, Youngstown East, and Youngstown Chaney. The Vindicator
