Cleveland-Area District Wrestling Preview

A preview of what is likely the toughest Division I district in the state (Massillon Perry), even without Lakewood St. Edward who is in their first year at the Marion Harding district. The Perry district features three currently undefeated wrestlers: Richie Spicel of Brunswick (35-0 at 140), Kenmore sophomore Cody Lamberg (34-0 at 189) and Adam Cogar of Barberton (40-0 at 215). Division II district Akron Firestone and Division III district Maple Heights should also be extremely competitive. Opening rounds for all wrestling districts start Friday afternoon. The Plain Dealer

Toledo Libbey's Buford Named to McDonald's All-American Game

The Libbey basketball standout became the second Toledo City League player (first was Jim Jackson) to be named on the prestigious McDonald's All-American game. The 6-foot-5 guard is one of only 24 high school players named to the game that will air live on ESPN on March 26th. The Libbey star is joined by fellow Ohio State recruit B.J. Mullens of Canal Winchester. Buford is averaging 22.9 points, 11.1 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game. The Cowboys were ranked No. 4 in the final Division II state poll. The Toledo Blade


Lakota West's Gray Selected to McDonald's All-Star Game

Amber Gray, a Lakota West senior, is one of 20 girls basketball players from around the country named to the elite all-star game. The game will be played March 26th and will be televised live on ESPNU. Gray, a Tennessee recruit, is averaging 19 points and 8 rebounds for the Firebirds. Lakota West (22-1) plays Chaminade-Julienne (19-4) in a district final at 1 p.m. Saturday at Harrison. The Cincinnati Enquirer


South Point Edges Past Federal Hocking, 42-40

Last night in a Division III district-semifinal at Waverly High School, South Point managed to advance despite being held to 12 second-half points. Federal Hocking (16-6) had defeated South Point (16-6) earlier in the season. The fourth quarter was all about defense as the two teams combined for 11 points in the final eight minutes. South Point's freshman point guard Kayla Fletcher led all scorers with 18 points. The Pointers now face Frankfort Adena in a district final on Saturday night at Waverly.

Mansfield Senior Approves New Head Football Coach

At a Tuesday night board meeting in Mansfield, Jamie Masi was unanimously approved to become the Tygers next football coach. Masi is a 1989 Mansfield Senior High graduate and he will look to turn around a program that went 4-6 last year. The Tygers do return quarterback Jacob Owens, who passed for 1,475 yards and 14 touchdowns. Before returning to his alma-mater, Masi coached at West Jefferson (1999), New Albany (2000 to 2003) and Delaware Hayes (2004 to 2007). Mansfield News Journal
