Football: St. Xavier/Colerain Headline Cincinnati Football Event
For the last 11 years in the Cincinnati-area, the prep football season has been kicked off by the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown. Today, Tom Gamble (organizer of event) will announce the full schedule for the opening week showdown. While the full schedule, dates, and times haven't been released yet - one thing is certain: St. Xavier vs. Colerain. The two teams have combined for three of the last four state championships and it will be their fifth meeting (including playoffs) since the 2005 season. The Enquirer
Softball: Elmwood's Brittany Dauterman
For three seasons Elmwood softball standout Brittany Dauterman shared her team's pitching duties with Kayla Chapman. Now that Chapman has been graduated for almost a year, Dauterman has been left to carry the pitching duties alone. Dauterman has a 0.40 ERA with 235 strike outs in 104 innings while posting a 15-0 record. The senior will pitch for the University of Findlay next spring. Toledo Blade
Softball: LaGrange Keystone Junior Kara Dill
Kara Dill, a standout junior shortstop/pitcher ro Keystone, doesn't have much time for anything else besides school, softball, and sleep. Dill is being recruited by some of college softball's premier Division I programs. At the same time, she's on track to earn both her high school degree and an associate degree from Lorain Community College in June 2009. Dill began the week hitting .591 and, as the second pitcher to teammate Lauren Wagner, has a 5-1 record for the Wildcats (18-4). Plain Dealer
Baseball: Chilicothe Edges Athens
Yesterday in Southeastern Ohio Athletic League play, Chilicothe defeated Athens 6-5. This was one game in the conference's Day of Champions as all 10 SEOAL teams were in action. Cody Speakman, who took over for Chillicothe starter Aaron Dixon in the fourth inning, picked up the victory. There were three lead changes and three ties during the contest. Athens Messenger
Baseball: Northwest Knocks off Tuslaw
Northwest scored five runs over the last three innings to break a deadlock with home-standing Tuslaw and pull out a 7-3 victory on Wednesday afternoon. Andrew McAvinew and Donnie Macko each collected two hits for Northwest. Tuslaw fell to 10-10 with the loss. Northwest is now 9-12. The Independent

Baseball: Cincinnati St. Xavier sweeps doubleheader with rival Elder
In a double-header battle between two Greater Catholic League foes, St. Xavier swept Elder by scores of 3-1 and 7-1. Ollier pitched the 10th and 11th innings in the completion of a suspended game from last month, which the Bombers won 3-1, and returned to the mound to start St. Xavier's 7-1 win in the nightcap. Elder came into this game ranked No. 4 in the state. Fellow GCL member Moeller is currently No. 6, but St. X was unranked. St. Xavier senior pitcher Richie Ollier allowed four hits in a total of six innings over two games. The Enquirer
Softball: Hebron Lakewood Defeats Heath
Lakewood, coming off their first loss in 22 games, picked up a huge 7-3 victory over Heath (11-10, 5-6) to clinch at least a share of the Mid-State League-Ohio Division title. The Lancers can clinch an outright title tonight with a win over Bexley. Leading the way for Lakewood (22-1, 9-1) was Lindsay Barrett who hit a two-run double and a two-run homer to propel the Lancers to victory. Lakewood pitcher Alissa Birkhimer pitched well enough to get the win, her 21st of the the season. Newark Advocate
Softball: Margaretta stuns Oak Harbor
In a game that shook up the Sandusky Bay Conference standings, Margaretta defeated Oak Harbor 2-1 behind a strong pitching performance by Courtney Parr. The Margaretta win dropped the Lady Rockets into a tie with Perkins for second place at 7-2, one game behind front-running Clyde at 8-1. Parr (5-10) went the distance for the win, allowing an earned run on the two sixth-inning hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks. Liz Weber countered by allowing two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks for Oak Harbor. Sandusky Register
Baseball: Massillon Washington falls to Warren Harding
The Massillon Tigers were their own worst enemy in a 3-2 loss at Warren Harding Monday afternoon. A pair of Massillon errors led to all of Warren Harding's runs. The Tigers outhit the Raiders, 6-5, but it was defense that was the deciding factor. Matt Skelly was the only Tiger with multiple hits, as he finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Softball: Chardon NDCL Knocks off Cardinal Mooney
In Youngstown yesterday, the visiting NDCL Lions defeated the Mooney Cardinals 5-4. The Lions scored all five of their runs in the fourth inning Monday and held off Mooney (15-5) for a victory at the Fields of Dreams. NDCL improved their record to 15-1. Youngstown Vindicator

Baseball: CHCA Wins 5th Straight MVC
Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy has been a scoring machine in 2008, scoring double digit runs in 15 of their 19 games this season. Their 12-1 victory over North College Hill solidifed another Miami Valley Conference Scarlet Division championship. It is their fifth straight MVC title and it was CHCA's 11th win by 10 or more runs. Junior first baseman Drake Browne was leading the team with a .571 average and three home runs going into the game. Sophomore left fielder Jacob Schomaker was hitting .556 and the team as a whole is hitting .434. The Enquirer
Baseball: Hopewell-Loudon Remains Undefeated in MAL
Hopewell-Loudon picked up a huge 8-1 win over Freemont St. Joe and their ace, junior Eric Gray. At 14-4 overall and 4-0 in the Midland Athletic League, Hopewell-Loudon is the league's lone unbeaten squad. Tyler Browns (5-0) picked up the victory for the Chieftans as he lowerd his ERA to 1.53. Baseball: Home Run Derby Starts Tonight
The Lake County Captains (minor league team of the Cleveland Indians) are pairing up with The News-Herald to deliver a home run derby competition among teams in and around Eastlake, the home of the Captains. The event will include players from 20 schools in Lake, Geauga and eastern Cuyahoga counties. Hitters from Fairport, Gilmour, Kirtland and West Geauga will kick off the event tonight following the Captains' home game against Greensboro. Among the athletes competing tonight are Gilmour junior Billy Urban, Kirtland senior Anthony Comella, Fairport senior Tim Knotts, and West Geauga senior Robbie LaRiccia. The News-Herald
Baseball: Lima Shawnee Stops Findlay
Lima Shawnee eventually got to Findlay's Alex Henry, a freshman right-hander, in an 8-3 non-league win over the Trojans at Flag City Memorial Field. David Gerad and Garrett Black had three hits each and Cody Roberts had two for Lima Shawnee, 17-3 overall and tied for the lead (5-0) in the Western Buckeye League. Baseball: Newark Catholic Defeats Heath
Newark Catholic's Bo Kreager hit two home runs on Monday to lead the Green Wave to a 4-1 Mid-State League-Ohio Division victory at Dave Klontz Field. It was the Bulldogs' first loss in the MSL-Ohio and they fell to 18-2 overall and 9-1 in the league. The Green Wave improved to 12-3, 7-3. Newark Catholic's Garrett Clark got the win. Newark Advocate

Baseball: New London Coach wins 300th
Glen Morse earned his 300th coaching victory Monday at New London as his Wildcats posted a 4-3 win over Plymouth in Firelands Conference play. Morse and New London have won at least 19 games each season since 2000 and he has a career record of 300-106 at New London and 313-116 overall. New London (9-3, 5-2) scored three times in the third to take a 3-1 lead, with the Big Red knotting the score with two in the top of the fourth. Sandusky Register
Baseball: Boys State Poll is Released
The Associated Press released their state baseball poll on Tuesday evening. A couple of Hilliard schools cracked the top 5 in Division I. Hilliard Davidson (No. 1) and Hilliard Darby (No. 5) are representing the Columbus-area well. Northeast Ohio is dominating the Division II poll as Cleveland Benedictine, Mentor Lake Catholic, Tallmadge, and Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit are the top 4 teams. Youngstown Ursuline (Division III) and Newark Catholic (Division IV) are also ranked No. 1 in their respective divisions. The Dispatch
University School Wins at Classic Park
The Indians' minor league team, the Lake County Captains, are hosting baseball games this week at Captains Stadium. On Tuesday, the University Preppers mercy-ruled Eastlake North 12-1. During the first three innings, the Preppers scored 11 runs. US left fielder Zach Persky had RBI singles in the first and second innings and drove in a run with a ground out in the third as the Preppers (3-8) staked starting pitcher Pat Shedlock to a huge early cushion. Lebanon (No. 10 in the Division I state poll) defeated Greenville (No. 3 in the same poll) 7-6 yesterday at Lebanon. Junior Alex Machen drove in the winning runs with a two-run homer to left-center in the sixth inning. The Warriors were down 6-1 before scoring the final six runs to defeat Greenville. Baseball: Canton Central Catholic Beats Central Christian
Two private schools in Canton stuck in a pitcher's duel ended with a 2-0 win by Central Catholic. Chris Snopel (14 K's in 6 2/3 innings) picked up the win as the Crusaders (14-0) remained undefeated. The lone Central Christian hit came on an infield single in the third inning. The Independent

Softball: League Title in Reach
Harrison (17-2, 7-0 Fort Ancient Valley Conference Buckeye division) defeated league foe Glen Este 2-0 yesterday behind a strong pitching performance by Amanda Meyer. With the victory, Harrison put itself in excellent shape for the league title, with only three FAVC-B games remaining. Meyer, headed to Bellarmine next season, has all 19 decisions (17-2) for Harrison this season. The Enquirer
Softball: West Geauga Pitcher Throws Another No-Hitter
West Geauga pitcher Erin Bukvic has had a spectacular 2008 season at the mound and she added another memory with her second no-hitter in the last two weeks. The Wolverines defeated Orange 9-0 as Bukvic struck out 10 and improved her record to 8-2. The Plain Dealer
Rossford Looking for a new League
Northern Lakes League member Rossford is looking to leave that league in favor of another. Last night the board of education voted unanimously to leave the NLL and seek membership in a different conference. There is an opening in the Suburban Lakes League after the departure of Lakota. If it is approved, athletic director Chuck Cox said Rossford could start competing in the SLL as early as the 2009-2010 school year. The Blade
Track and Field: East Canton's Caitilin Sharp
After playing 103 games as a guard for East Canton girls basketball team, Caitlin Sharp has decided to stick with running as her sport in college. With 1,666 points career points, Sharp was the fifth all-time scorer in Stark County history. Sharp was a four-year All-Ohioan in cross country and has been a state qualifier in track every year since she was a freshman. Sharp will continue running next year at nearby Malone College. Baseball: Cardinal Mooney Defeats Boardman
In a battle of Youngstown schools, Mooney pulled off a 7-6 win over Boardman. Mooney's Matt Durkin hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to give the Cardinals the win. Scott Smith (5-0) picked up the win with relief help from Dan Eich. The Vindicator

Football: Huber Heights Wayne Freshman Receiving Offers
Although it is typically unheard of for a sophomore, let alone a freshman, to receive Division I scholarship offers in football - Wayne freshman Braxton Miller has already received on from the University of Cincinnati. Miller, a super frosh quarterback, began impressing the scouts after looking solid in Week 1 against Cincinnati Colerain. At 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, Miller also played basketball for the Warriors. Softball: Jackson Defeats Lake in 11 innings
In a big Federal League softball game, the Polar Bears came through in the 11th inning to knock off Lake, 4-3. Kayla Ashbrook's sacrifice fly to center field scored Erinn Wright from third for for the victory. Jackson had their chances to score their fourth run earlier in the game as Abbey Schory (leadoff triple in the sixth) and Maddy Richards (triple with one out in the ninth) were left stranded on third base. Softball: State Poll has a Central Ohio Feel
The first state softball poll was released yesterday and there are several teams from the Columbus area on it. In Division I, Grove City (No. 2), Gahanna (No. 3), Marysville (No. 7), and Hilliard Darby (No. 10) all were in the top ten. Granville and Circleville were the top two spots in Division II. Hebron Lakewood is the top ranked team in Division III and several other Central Ohio teams cracked the top 10 in Divisions III and IV. Columbus Dispatch
Baseball: Sophomores lead way for St. Edward
Stetson Allie is only a sophomore but the St. Edward shortstop played well beyond his years in helping lead the host Eagles to an 8-7 victory over previously unbeaten Walsh Jesuit (7-1, 2-1) in a Cuyahoga River Baseball Conference game played Tuesday at Northern Ohio Baseball. Softball: Fremont Ross wins with one hit
Fremont Ross managed just one hit off Findlay ace Maggie Gilliland Tuesday, but it was enough as the Little Giants won 2-1. Fremont's Carey Clark followed a leadoff walk with a one-out solo shot over the left-centerfield fence in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Little Giants the win. The Findlay Courier

Softball: Cincinnati Colerain Wins GMC Showdown
On a cold and windy Monday afternoon, the Colerain Cardinals picked up a 3-2 victory over league foe Hamilton. Both Colerain and Hamilton were undefeated in GMC play and unbeaten overall. are Before losing to Colerain, the Big Blue outscored its first seven opponents by a combined 49-3 while going 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the league. The Cardinals are now 6-0 both overall and in the GMC. Junior pitcher Emily Schwaeble got the win (her 15th) along with 15 strikeouts. The Enquirer
Football: Coaches Have Friendly Rivalry
Old friends Moe Daniska (Canton South) and Ed Miley (Marlington) will coach against each other July 19 in The Repository East-West All-Star Football Game. Daniska and Miley are young, rival head coaches in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference. Miley will have five of his graduating players on his East team. Daniska will have three. Canton Repository
Baseball: Athens Defeats Logan
On a cold Monday night in Southeastern Ohio Athletic League action, there was a pitcher's duel between Athens' Steven Eberts and Logans' Matt Poindexter. The two combined to allow just seven hits and two runs. Fortunately for Eberts, those two runs were scored by Athens. Kyle Dean and Matt Witten each hit in a run for Athens (4-3, 2-1). Canfield Rallies to knock off Austintown Fitch
After being down 6-0, the Canfield Cardinals rallied to win 9-7 over the Falcons. The comeback by the Cardinals (6-2) was highlighted by home runs smashed by juniors Jared Turocy and Tom Cheslik. Canfield's third pitcher of the day, senior Nate Wilson, came in from the bullpen to earn the win. Fitch took the early lead in the second inning as they would send 11 to the plate and score six runs. Turocy took a walk that sent in the Cardinals' eighth and winning run in the seventh inning. Track and Field: Mayfield Runner Headed to West Point
Mayfield senior Bradley Potts has excelled as a runner in both track and cross country during his time as a Wildcat. Even more impressive than his athletic accomplishments are his 4.65 grade-point-average and a top-10 ranking in his class of 300. Potts will be headed to Army in the fall. Potts received an appointment from the Superintendent of West Point, which is given to a select few. The News-Herald

Football: Massillon Names New Head Coach
The Massillon Tigers have a new football coach. After weeks of speculation that former Nordonia coach Jason Hall would be named the next Tiger coach, it finally became official at a special meeting of the Board of Education last night. Hall becomes the 32nd head coach in Massillon's history as he replaces Tom Stacy, who departed in February to become the head coach of Green High School. Massillon superintendent Fred Blosser made the recommendation to the board, which approved it 5-0. Massillon will be Hall's fourth team since 2002. The Mount Union All-American guided two programs (Ravenna Southeast and Lyndhurst Brush) to their first playoff appearance. In Hall's only season at Nordonia, he guided the Knights to a 10-2 record. Softball: Experienced Harrison Routs Young Kings
The Harrison Wildcats went on the road to defeat Kings 10-1 yesterday. Harrisson took advantage of five Knights errors to pour on the offense. Senior left fielder Michelle Stenger went 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI, while senior second baseman Lauren Kreinest drove in three runs with a home run and a sacrifice fly and junior catcher Lacey Sowders had a two-run triple and scored three runs to lead Harrison, which improved to 8-2 overall. After the most succesful playoff run in Mentor's hockey history, head coach Mike Tinik will not return. After guiding the Cardinals to their biggest win in their program's history (a district semi-final win over University), Tinik's contract was not renewed according to district spokesman Justin Maynor. Mentor hockey booster club president John Blomstrom said Tinik was informed of his non-renewal in a meeting Wednesday morning with Mentor principal Joe Spiccia and athletic director Jeff Cassella. Mentor finished 17-12-1 after going 14-40 the previous two seasons. The News-Herald

Boys Basketball: Lakewood St. Edward Coach to assist at Jordan Classic
St. Edward basketball coach Eric Flannery, fresh off taking the Eagles to the Division I state final, has been named an assistant coach for the Jordan Brand Classic game. The game, featuring some of the nation's premier high school seniors, will be played on April 19 at Madison Square Garden in New York and televised live by ESPN2. Flannery's graduating forward Delvon Roe was invited to the game, but he is unable to play after an injury that kept Roe out for nearly the entire season. The Plain Dealer
Winter Sports: Cincinnati-area All-Stars
The Cincinnati Enquirer names their 2008 winter sports all-stars. Amber Gray (Lakota West) and Yancey Gates (Withrow) lead the winter sports all-stars as girls' and boys' basketball player of the year, respectively. Gates will continue his basketball career at the University of Cincinnati and Gray will be playing for the 2008 NCAA champions in Tennessee. Orlando Scales was the wrestler of the year. Craig Sherrill (Elder) and Amy Wormus (McAuley) were the bowlers of the year. Swimmers of the year are Jim Barbiere (St. Xavier) and Danielle Jansen (Mason). The Enquirer
Softball: McNicholas Senior Throws No-Hitter
Senior pitcher Ronni Ferris of Cincinnati McNicholas struck out 14 batters on her way to a no-hitter yesterday against Badin. McNicholas won the game 3-0 and improved their record to 6-0, 3-0 in the GGCL Grey. The Rockets, who allowed just six runs while going 26-2 last season, posted their fourth shutout this year. Track: Toledo Rogers Junior has Eyes on Olympics
Erik Kynard, a junior at Rogers High School in Toledo, has his eyes on the Division I state meet as well as the Olympics. The Rogers junior wants to stake claim on a state high jump title that has eluded him the last two springs. During the indoor track season, Kynard jumped a personal record jump of 7 feet, 3¾ inches. Only six others in the country -- amateur and professional -- have jumped higher this year. Jesse Williams, who jumps for Nike, owns the top mark this season by clearing 7-7¼. Track: Tuslaw's Melissa Wohlheter pulls rare double
Melissa Wohlheter is one of the few athletes that attempt to run back-to-back races at track meets. Shortly after finishing the 400-meter race she gets ready to run the 300-meter hurdles. She holds school records in both events and was an All-Ohioan in the 300 hurdles at last year's state meet. Track and Field: Pole Vaulter Tommy Marks
Huber Heights Wayne senior pole vaulter Tommy Marks set a personal best by clearing 15 feet, 6 inches at the Warrior Relays yesterday. Marks finished second in the state indoor competition by clearing 14-6. Marks, a University of Cincinnati recruit, will be one of the athletes to watch as the outdoor state competition goes down at Jesse Owens Stadium in Columbus later in the season. Ironically, Marks' effort isn't even a school record: Les West registered the state's first 16-foot jump in 1975. Dayton Daily News
Track and Field: Northwood Edges out Sandusky St. Mary
Despite Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic's nine first place finishes in a triangular with Northwood and Danbury, the Panther boys came up short to the Northwood Rangers by a score of 67 to 65. The hosting Lakers totalled 37 points. SMCC's girls track team had a first-place finish with 67 points, while Danbury was second (61) and Northwood third (49.5). Sandusky Register

Baseball: Defending Champs Remain Undefeated
Lakota West, the defending Division I baseball champions, improved their record to 6-0 with a dramatic 5-4 comeback win over Oak Hills. The Firebirds, trailing 4-0 and down to their last strike, rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lakota West senior Matt Foor had a two-run pinch hit double to tie the game. Girls Basketball: Coach Openings in Lake/Geagua Counties
Rival schools Willoughby South and Eastlake North are both still looking for girls basketball head coaches. Ryan Tyna confirmed Tuesday that he resigned his position as North's girls basketball coach. Tyna finished up his third season with the team and had a 20-43 record. South's Michelle Jones stepped down after finishing 5-16 this past year. Also, the Kenston football coaching position is available after Rick Adams left the Bombers for the same position at Rocky River. The News-Herald
